On top of the camera you find the mode dial containing the SCN1 and SCN2 settings. Turn the mode dial to one of the two Scene modes and the Scene menu will appear on the display. The multi-controller enables you to select the desired scene. Push to the right and you will get some additional information about the meaning of the setting, whereas pushing the controller to the left gives access to the record and set-up mode. The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 offers an extensive range of scenes: portrait, soft skin, scenery, sports, night portrait, night scenery, self portrait, food, party, candlelight, fireworks, starry sky, beach, aerial photo, snow, high sensitivity, baby 1, baby 2 and underwater. Soft skin detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than in portrait mode, Starry Sky allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject by slowing down the shutter speed, thereby enabling you to create an image that you could otherwise not have taken in Night Scenery mode. The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 incorporates a very nice feature that is in fact ever so convenient in practice. Once you have worked with this feature, you will never replace it with anything else. The Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) recognizes and compensates jitter. Naturally, handling the 10x optical zoom will cause more blur when taking pictures with the tele zoom, or whenever the shutter speed is slowed down. The Panasonic TZ1 offers two Optical Image Stabilizer settings. Mode 1 operates continuously and can assist during photo composition, the mode 2 function compensates the jitter when the shutter button is pressed. This mode is the most effective and offers a great degree of stabilization. A small detail: when you press the right button of the multi-selector a small demonstration appears. The O.I.S. is fixed to mode 1 in Simple mode, to mode 2 in the Self Portrait scene and off in Starry Sky scene mode. During video recording mode 2 is disabled.

The built-in speaker is positioned on top of the Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 camera. The Panasonic TZ1 is able to add audio after you have taken the picture. By activating the Play mode you can play back the pictures with the audio added to them. In addition, the speaker is used for recorded video clips, which can be played and heard in the same way. You can also deactivate audio when playing back the recorded images. The Panasonic Lumix TZ1 supports DPOF. DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) is a system that allows the user to select which pictures to print, how many copies of each picture to print and whether or not to print the recording date on the pictures, when using a DPOF compatible digital photo printer or photo printing store. You can select either a single picture or multiple pictures.
At the top right of the front of the camera you will find the AF Assist lamp. In low light conditions the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 may experience some difficulty focussing, yet by illuminating the subject the camera is able to focus easier. If the AF assist lamp is activated, an AF area a size wider than usual is displayed and the AF assist lamp is switched on when you press the shutter button halfway in dark places etc.

Those of you who want to be a creative photographer may want to use the Colour Effect mode. In the record menu you simply select a colour effect that matches the recording conditions and your image of the recording. Cool makes the picture become bluish, Warm makes the picture become reddish, B&W gives you the black and white finish and Sepia makes the picture become sepia, which is a vintage brownish colour. Editor's comment:
"The Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 is a very interesting digital camera. Although the camera we have had in our office was a pre-production model and should therefore not be judged as a final production camera, we may conclude that Panasonic has developed the answer for those who are in search of a compact digital camera with a large optical zoom. As a bonus you will get the very powerful Optical Image Stabilizer. The camera has a very user-friendly way of operating. The menu is fast to navigate and straightforward. The housing has a solid feel to it and the design is both stylish and classic at the same time. For a compact digital camera the Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 gives you all the tools and settings you could wish for. Imagine the same model with aperture and shutter speed priority... wouldn't it just be an amazing camera? As soon as we receive a full production model we will publish a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ1 digital camera review..."
