One of the keys to a user's enjoyment of Nikon's digital SLR equipment is the creative potential afforded by having interchangeable lenses. The new D50 offers seamless compatibility with Nikon's extensive family of high-performance AF Nikkor lenses, as well as the expanding family of dedicated digital DX Nikkor lenses, providing superb color reproduction, razor-sharp image clarity and fast, accurate autofocus performance. Nikon expands its lens assortment by the introduction of a new standard zoom lens, specially made for digital photography. The new Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens has a 3x optical focal range and can therefore be marked as a standard zoom lens. The new lens is optimized to be used on Nikon digital SLR cameras and is a perfect match for the Nikon D50 camera. Compared to a 35mm camera the new Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens has a focal range of 27-82.5mm which covers an ideal range for inside shootings or portraits. The new developed Silent Wave Motor contributed to the ultra-compact and light weight design. The Nikon lens weighs only 210 g. An ED-glass element and an aspherical element guarantee a high dissolvent capacity whereas chromatic aberrations and other errors are restricted to an absolute minimum. Due to the built-in Silent Wave Motor the auto focus function is assured to operate smoothly and quietly. The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens is available in silver and black, so that it is appropriate at the colour alternatives of the Nikon D50.
To enlarge the playing field of the user of a Nikon D50 or other Nikon digital SLR cameras Nikon introduces a second new lens - the Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED lens. This ultra-compact light weight tele zoom lens has a 3.6x focal range covering 55-200m (equiv. 35mm camera is 82.5-300mm). The new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED lens and the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens both have an excellent cost-quality comparison. The new Nikon lens is fully optimized to be used on Nikon digital SLR cameras and of course this includes the Nikon D50 digital SLR camera. The compact lens offers a powerful zoom range of 55-200mm and is suitable for subjects like candid photography, sports, nature and wild life. The new developed Silent Wave Motor contributed to its ultra-compact and light weight design. The Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED lens weighs only 255 g. Two ED-glass elements guarantee a high dissolvent capacity whereas the chromatic aberrations and other errors are restricted to a minimum. Due to the built-in Silent Wave Motor the auto focus function is assured to operate smooth and quiet. By using the lens in combination with the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens the user is able to cover a wide focal range from 18mm wide to 200mm tele (27-300mm equivalent with a 35mm camera). With such a zoom range the user is able to capture a large diversity of subjects and situations. Just like the AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED lens the new AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED lens is available in silver and black, so that it is appropriate at the colour alternatives of the Nikon D50.

At a shutter speed of 'bulb', the shutter will remain open while the camera shutter-release button is held down. In delayed remote and quick-response remote modes --, is displayed instead of 'bulb'; the shutter opens when the shutter-release button on the optional ML-L3 remote control is pressed (2 sec. after the button is pressed in delayed remote mode) and remains open until the remote-control shutter-release button is pressed a second time (maximum 30 minutes).
P, S, A, and M modes offer varying degrees of control over shutter speed and aperture. P mode - Camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure, S mode - User chooses shutter speed; camera selects aperture for best results. Use to freeze or blur motion, A mode - User chooses aperture; camera selects shutter speed for best results. Use to blur background or bring both foreground and background into focus and M mode - User controls both shutter speed and aperture. Set shutter speed to 'bulb' for long time-exposures.

Nikon D50 Silver or black versions of both lenses and bodies will be available
Editors comment:
"The looks of a flashy silver body may be way out of the question by a professional photographer; many enthusiastic amateurs would love to bring more colour into their digital world. The availability of two colours of silver and black gives the new consumer more choice and more freedom to choose. I wonder what if Nikon decided to bring more fashionable colours into the digital SLR market, what would the response be of this mass market?"
