The 10.2 Megapixel Nikon D40x digital SLR camera has high quality exposure that has already proven itself in, for example, the Nikon D80, as well as in professional D2Xs. I'm referring, of course, to the 3D Color Matrix Metering II, advanced, optimised exposure that uses a special colour matrix metering sensor. It is good to see that innovative, high-quality solutions used in the professional segment are rapidly being applied in the amateur segment. Clarity, colour, contrast, selected focus area and the distance of the camera to the subject are measured for every photo. This metering refers back to an on-board database of more than 30,000 photographic settings to determine the final value quickly and accurately. This high-quality technique fits into the concept seamlessly and users will have no problems operating the Nikon D40x. Although the Nikon D40x's resolution has been raised from 6 to 10 Megapixels this has not been achieved at the expense of the speed of the continuous shots. The Nikon D40x is able to shoot 100 JPEG (JPEG Fine compression) pictures in succession with a speed of 3 frames per second. A picture in the highest JPEG quality has a file size of approximately 4.8MB and a resolution of 3872 x 2592 pixels. If you would rather fill your memory card in RAW format, you will have to wait after six pictures in order to empty the buffer. A RAW picture has a file size of approximately 9MB. It is also possible to take a picture in RAW and JPEG (file size approximately 10.1MB) with a maximum burst of six pictures in a row. I would advise using a fast Secure Digital or SDHC memory card. The speed of 3 fps will be enough for most photographers to enable them to capture a moment swiftly. If you really want to practise action photography and shoot faster, you should maybe consider the Nikon D200 DSLR.

Excellent white balance is a must for a successful picture. You really depend on correct white balance if shooting in JPEG. In addition to the automatic white balance, the Nikon D40x has a wide selection of white balance settings so that every lighting situation can be captured in a controlled way. If shooting in RAW, you will depend less on white balance and will have more space to correct it afterwards. Nikon Capture NX is one of the many RAW editing software packets available and is excellent for post processing and converting RAW format pictures. As well as the standard white balance settings such as artificial light, daylight, cloudy, direct sunlight, etc, the Nikon D40x DSLR has a PRE white balance Preset setting. This setting enables you to determine white balance manually, using a grey card or a white subject. It is also possible to use the white balance of an earlier made picture as reference and to copy it to the PRE white balance Preset setting. This is only possible if the pictures have been taken with the Nikon D40x digital SLR camera. It is even possible to provide pictures taken with the Nikon D40x camera with a text. The text can be up to 36 characters and can be put in via the Nikon D40x camera's menu. A virtual keyboard will appear on the LCD monitor in which you can enter the text. It is possible to read this text via Picture Project, which comes with the camera or Nikon Capture NX software.
