Even with high resolution, 12.4 Megapixel pictures, the new Nikon D2xs is not slowing down. For those who are in need of high speed shooting the Nikon D2xs dSLR enables up to 5 frames per second shooting at 12.4-megapixel resolution, and an astounding 8 frames per second at 6.8 Megapixels. Furthermore continuous shooting at a super fast 8 frame per second is possible during use of the High-Speed Crop function that records the central portion of the frame at 6.8 Megapixel resolution. What's more, the refined viewfinder of the Nikon D2xs has been enhanced during High-speed Crop mode for much simpler, more accurate composition. The new Nikon D2xs includes a new LCD monitor with a 170-degree wide viewing angle which makes it very convenient to control sharpness, contrast and brightness of the captured images. The large format 2.5-inch 230,000 dot high-resolution LCD monitor display of the Nikon D2xs digital SLR offers larger type fonts that improve access to color-coded menus. Further evolution of the Recent Settings menus adds the ability to delete current settings or lock them to prevent accidental changes. And the Nikon D2xs also offers RGB Histogram display enabling images to be more accurately assessed in the large LCD monitor. Furthermore, it is also possible to display channel-specific ([R] red, [G] green or [B] blue) histograms for immediate and more detailed image verification.

The Adobe RGB profile provides a broader range of colors than the sRGB profile, making it a more suitable choice for professional photographers. The D2xs has also been optimized for post-processing of images with the ability to select Adobe RGB from either Mode I or Mode III in camera. There' also an additional new Black & White color mode available to further expand the photographer's creative possibilities. A newly added feature, in-camera trimming, allows RAW, TIFF and JPEG images taken using the D2xs to be trimmed within the camera to produce images of reduced display sizes ranging from 640x480 to 2560x1920 pixels. The Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures. The Nikon D2xs also offers an Image Overlay function that merges selected RAW (NEF) files already stored on the Compact Flash card to create a new image file within the camera. The Nikon D2xs digital SLR camera will have a more all-round character to ensure high quality shooting performance in every environment. For example the 11-area AF system of the Nikon D2xs with 9 cross-type AF sensors; this system is updated to perform even faster and with greater precision. The 11-area AF system employs Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 2000 AF Sensor Module. Of these 11 widely spread AF sensors, 9 are cross-type sensors positioned in the logical rule-of-thirds array. All 9 cross-type sensors remain active when using High-speed Crop mode. Nikon's acclaimed 1,005-pixel RGB Exposure/Color Matrix Metering Sensor to achieve optimum exposure for each shot. All this features enables the professional user to concentrate on shooting by doing away with the time-consuming distractions of seeking out the most suitable settings for the best possible results. Offering a high resolution of 12.4 Megapixels means handling a huge amount of data. The CMOS image sensor of the Nikon D2xs provides both high image quality and high-speed performance. And despite the extremely high resolution achieved by 12.4 effective megapixels, image data is recorded at exceptionally high speed through use of a 4-channel output method. The Nikon D2xs provides Nikon photographers with the advanced opportunity to produce the significantly larger image files demanded by industry today. But with Nikon, high image quality is so much more than a matter of Megapixels. In fact, a plethora of other high-level technologies are required to achieve the outstandingly high level of performance that today's photographer's need, and these are exactly what the D2xs provides.
Nikonians
Nikonians Pro view
Can you improve on perfection? Apparently Nikon has done it. The preliminary technical specs on the D2Xs made available from our good friends at LetsGoDigital has resulted in what could be best described as professional applause mixed with surprise. Our Nikonians professionals quickly did some "reading between the lines." This has been encouraging reading to say the least. In all aspects, the specs are amazing. Most of these improvements (almost 20 by last count) had not even been listed on most of our Nikonians "wish-lists." It seems that Nikon is now making upgrades to what we had already considered to be the ultimate "flagship" of their DSLR line.
The 2.5 inch LCD monitoring screen has also been improved (a major bonus for our slightly older and most successful pro's who are now realizing their eyesight could use a boost). Especially important for all of us landscapers out on the field on bright sunny days, the beach or the snow. We do not all have 3rd party LCD hoods and those of us who do seem to always loose one of the side wings without even trying. Many are developing a scar in the eyelid, much like those of snipers, from poking our eyebrows with those hoods. So this 'minor' improvement could really be 'major' for more than a few.
The new EN-EL4a battery power sounds like a longer lasting version, but most of the improvements are buried deep within the camera body. Add the new crop functions and extra control over autofocus settings to the black and white shooting mode and we have some exciting new developments to look forward to.
Nikonians professionals, especially those specializing in landscapes, have long yearned for a low ISO setting in a digital Pro SLR body. Those memories from Fujichrome Velvia 50 and Kodachrome 64 are still there, vivid. Yes, the old days of film grain are now replaced by "digital noise" and the constant quest for lower ASA (now ISO) film speeds had always been a factor when seeking sharpness with the best possible tripods. Yet, our search for the lowest speeds in controlled environments was tempered by the opposite goal of high speed films for sports and action photography. And we will be left wanting this time around in digital.
- Innovative electronic function that covers the viewfinder
[when the D2Xs is set at Hi-Speed crop mode]
- New LCD monitor with 170 degrees viewing angle
- New EN-EL4a Lithium Ion battery and D2Xs power saving
- New crop function enabling users to post process images in-camera
- Black and White mode
- Sophisticated control of the Multi Cam AF Module
[most likely an improvement a-la-D200 mode of 11 AF and 7 AF areas]
- 3D Color Matrix Metering II in Hi-Speed crop mode
- Extra steps in HI ISO boost
- Possibility to exchange settings between cameras
- Compatibility with Nikons new Image Authentication software.

But as soon as we can get our hands on a body, we'll let you know about them all. The Nikon D2Xs is expected to be available this summer and should come as a great boost for Nikonians who have not gotten a D2X yet for this fall photography.
The Nikon D2X, with a 100 to 800 ISO equivalency, plus HI-1 (1600) and HI-2 (3200) was most impressive to say the least. Those with experience in the use of high speed film - like the Fuji Neopan 1600 Professional, Ilford 3200 Delta Professional, and Kodak T-MAX P3200 - could easily appreciate the extraordinary noise management on the D2X, more so when high ISO speeds now render color, not just Black and White images like in those films. Now, with the D2Xs not only we get so much closer to the perfection we experienced with film and beyond, but have a wider array of HI ISO settings at our disposal: HI-0.3, HI-0.5, HI-0.7, HI-1 and HI-2.
This improved feature is likely to be enough to make our Nikonians Pros grab the new "s" model in a heartbeat and we are most curious about it and stand ready to thoroughly test for noise at high ISO, even when noise management in the D2X has already been proven superior to that on competing DSLR cameras with higher resolution. But, Nikon has further sweetened the deal. The Nikon D2Xs has also been optimized for post-processing of images with the ability to select Adobe RGB from either Mode I or Mode III in camera. There' also an additional new Black & White color mode available - in-camera - to further expand the photographer's creative possibilities.
Another newly added feature, in-camera trimming, allows RAW, TIFF and JPEG images taken using the D2xs to be trimmed in-camera to produce images of reduced display sizes ranging from 640x480 to 2560x1920 pixels. The Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures. In-camera image manipulation has been discussed frequently in our conversations with prominent pros, some of them in our Behind the Lens series of podcasts, who considered these a very useful series of tools, perhaps more important now than a quest for higher resolution. The D2Xs is obviously responding to that felt need for easier and faster in-camera workflow while chimping in the field, for quick post-processing.
