The standard delivered accessory, the Nikon MV-11 COOL-Station is a multi-functional station. Install the COOL-station and place the Nikon S3 digital camera in it to charge the Lithium-ion battery (approximately 2 hours charging time). Besides; you can even recharge the battery without the use of the station. The delivered Nikon EH-63 A/C adapter can be connected straight to the camera and provides the camera directly with energy. Besides that the user can view stored pictures immediately from the station on a television screen. The AV cable can be connected from the back of the station onto a television. And photos can be transferred to a computer or notebook via the USB cable. If you want to make a print of the captured images, it's a matter of connecting the station to a PictBridge supporting printer and print directly from the S3 camera. The Nikon MV-11 station features A/C connection, USB, Audio/Video out and a camera connection. The compact nikon cool station measures 96x42x49mm and weighs approximately 50 grams.
Almost always present, but mostly forgotten: the PictBridge compatibility. This helpful standard enables printing images directly from the camera on a PictBridge supporting printer. Connecting the Nikon COOL-station onto a PictBridge compatible printer a mini-lab is created. A special PictBridge startup screen will appear on the monitor. Miniature rendition lets you make a choice from six images. The multi selector is used as a navigator in this case. You can select one single photo to be printed out or a whole series of images. Besides that you can decide the amount of prints that has to be made of one photo, and you can select the paper they have to be printed on. Nowadays many small useful printers are available on today's market. A small Direct-photo-printer will definitely look great next to the station and the amount of space a set like this will take up is not too bad.

On top of the camera a main switch is placed, that changes the camera's setting to play or record mode, for viewing or capturing photos or recording video clips. The Coolpix S3 camera's menu contains the majority of the functions, that's what explains the small amount of buttons on the camera. On the one hand the design benefits from it and the neat appearance of the camera; on the other hand, it forces the user to dig into the menu frequently. This menu is nicely organised. The user's interface is very comprehensible and well thought-out. You can choose to read the menu by names or by icons. The icons do fit exactly on the screen which enhances the easy overview. All in all it is a well-organised, comprehensible, user-friendly menu, for effortless operation.
If you take the time, to take a closer look at a couple of square meters, to study some every-day subjects, you will be surprised of what you'll spot. In order to be able capturing these almost hidden subjects with the Nikon S3 digital camera, the macro/close-up function has to be activated. In macro/close-up mode the camera will continuously focus, even when the release button is not pushed half-way down. It's possible to get as close as 4cm to a subject.
The S3 features a quick-button for play. In recording mode you can view the last captured picture immediately. Pushing the multi selector to the right or down, you can view the photos in sequence or backward sequence. The pictures will appear on the screen quickly in a low resolution and are built up to a higher resolution. This method gives you the choice to either wait for the higher quality rendition or scroll quickly through the captured images. The main switch has a Scene mode in the center. This switch contains a large number of preset scenes, each of them putting emphasis on a certain subject. The scene mode Portrait, with besides that a threesome other scenes, features a composing-assistant. This aid advises you by means of gridlines that appear on the monitor in order to make a certain composition. Moreover, the S3 also features Face priority AF and auto red eye correction inside the camera.

Editor's conclusion:
"We have had the Nikon Coolpix S3 in our possession for a short time but this was enough to give us a first impression. The beautiful design of the camera is striking and eye-catching. Nikon has paid more and more attention to the software inside the camera lately. Especially this item is offered to play a bigger role at the present time. Functions like auto red eye correction inside the camera and also Face priority AF function, offer a lot of user-friendliness and they do their job pleasantly. It makes you wonder to what extend editing software can be automated and above all how intelligent can software inside the camera become. In a nutshell: it's a beautiful piece of designer software technique that is placed in an even more beautiful designer piece! The minute we receive a production sample we will be back with an extensive Nikon Coolpix S3 digital camera review ..."
