Railway Museum Gallery Holland
When testing the Nikon Coolpix P5000 digital compact camera, I took it along when I visited a piece of Dutch railway history, the Railway museum in Utrecht. The Railway museum is located in the Maliebaan station and gives visitors a glimpse of the past. Most of the test pictures were taken inside the railway museum, including a large depot where diverse old trains stand established. The lighting conditions were full of contrast ; darkness between the trains with spots of sunlight from the roof here and there. Although the Nikon Coolpix P5000 compact camera has an optical image stabilizer, I had to use a high ISO regularly to achieve the desired shutter speed or aperture.

Railway Museum Gallery  Nikon P5000 test
The Nikon P5000 camera is a handy compact digital camera for photographers who ask a lot of their camera. It may not be a replacement for a DSLR camera, but it does have settings for photographers who like to determine a shot themselves, such as aperture and shutter speed priority. The image stabilizer is always on in an environment like the Railway museum. Taking photographs of such large objects often requires a large depth of field and cannot be done with a low ISO and image stabilisation without long shutter speeds. The sample images were made with a production model of the Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera and must be judged accordingly. The thumbnail format and large format pictures have been reduced for easy viewing and compressed in order to guarantee quicker loading times. The larger images are the original, unprocessed images. The new Nikon P5000 is one of the digital compact cameras that have been nominated for a test in the next few weeks. We are currently testing several cameras and will publish a complete Nikon Coolpix P5000 review as soon as we have finished with this model. In the meantime, visit our digital camera test section for the latest digicam reviews.

Museum info
Photography
One of the Museum's largest sub-collections contains thousands of photographs of old stations, railway bridges, locomotives, railway workers and other railway theme subjects. The collection includes works photographs, press photographs, aerial photographs and the work of a number of well-known photographers such as Pieter Oosterhuis and Julius Perger.
Scale Train models
The museum has an extensive collection of models of famous locomotives and trains which have been made by various model-makers over the years. There is also a wide variety of miniature station buildings and railway bridges.
Railway Posters
The many posters are another important aspect of the Museum's pictorial collection. The Railway Museum has over 2000 railway placards and posters dating from 1865 which advertise train travel. In addition, about 20,000 posters from various companies and institutions which were displayed in stations from 1950 onwards are now part of the Railway Museum's collection.
Maliebaan Station
The 19th-century station on Maliebaan has been fully restored to its former glory. Here you feel like the first passenger in a recently completed station in 1874. A lavishly painted booking hall with chandeliers, a 1st and 2nd class waiting room, a luxury dining room and even toilets with a 19th-century feel show you how the station was once the gateway to the world. It will not therefore come as any surprise that this is also where you buy your admission ticket to the Railway Museum behind 19th-century ticket windows. The Royal Waiting Room from 1892 from the State Railway station in The Hague makes the station an example of stations of those days.
