On top of the Nikon P1 camera the main switch is located. The main switch contains a scene selector containing a large number of pre-set scenes. The scene mode on the Nikon p1 camera offers a menu of 16 scenes, each corresponding to a common situation, such as a backlit subject, sunset, or indoor shot. The camera settings are automatically adjusted to suit the selected scene, sparing the user the necessity of adjusting each setting separately. With Advanced option, 3 effects, including Normal, can be selected for 11 of the 16 scenes. For example, you can adjust an image in Portrait mode so that skin tones appear brighter. The photographic settings of the Nikon Coolpix P1 are automatically optimized on the basis of the selected subject. This is very useful and user-friendly in practice; it ensures a friendly use without requiring the knowledge of all sorts of exposure techniques. Integrated intelligent software is gradually playing a bigger role in the Nikon Coolpix camera.
The main switch on top of the camera contains also the P mode. In P mode, different combinations of shutter speed and aperture can be selected by pressing the multi selector right (flexible program). Press the multi-selector right or left to switch from one to the other. While the flexible program is in effect, shutter speed and aperture are displayed yellow (otherwise, they are displayed white), and an asterisk (*) appears next to the exposure mode indicator in the shooting display. To deactivate flexible program, press the multi selector left or right until the shutter speed and aperture are displayed in white, or rotate the mode dial to a different setting. Turning off the camera also deactivates flexible program. In P mode, shutter speed and aperture can be adjusted to suit the user's creative intent. P mode also gives the user control over ISO sensitivity, white balance, and the options in the Shooting menu.

The Nikon Coolpix P1 features an advanced red-eye correction tool. First of all the built-in flash fires several pre-flashes before the main flash fires to reduce redeye. In addition to this function, if "red-eye" is detected the camera will automatically correct it when storing the picture (In-Camera Red-Eye Fix). Using this function there is a slight delay before you can press the shutter release button again for the next shot.
On the back of the Nikon P1 camera you will find the multi-selector and the focus mode. You can choose a focus mode according to the subject and composition. AF auto focus where the P1 automati-cally adjusts focus according to distance to subject, Infinity where the camera focuses at infinity, Focusing limit where the Nikon P1 camera can focus on subjects 2m or more from the lens, (faster than normal autofocus) and Macro close-up (camera can focus on objects as close as 4 cm to the lens).
Also positioned on the multi-selector is the exposure compensation function. Exposure compensation is used to alter the exposure from the value suggested by the Nikon Coolpix P1 digital camera. Exposure compensation can be set to values between –2.0 EV (underexposure) and +2.0 EV (overexposure) in increments of 1/3 EV. This mode is not available if Fireworks (Scene mode) is activated.

The ISO settings of the P1 camera can be handled manually or automatically. ISO sensitivity is a measure of how sensitive the Nikon Coolpix P1 reacts to light. If the sensitivity is increased, the amount of light required for a certain exposure is decreased, allowing for faster shutter speeds. This is recommended when taking pictures in places under low light or of moving subjects. However, noise in the form of randomly-spaced, brightly-colored pixels may appear. The Coolpix P1 has an ISO range of 50, 100, 200 and 400 ISO.
The colour of the light reflected from an object varies with the color of the Light source. The human brain is able to adapt to such changes in color, with the result that we see white objects as white, regardless of whether they are in the shade, direct sunlight, or under incandescent lighting. The white balance settings of the Nikon P1 contain Auto, Pre white balance pre-set, Direct sunlight, Incandescent, Fluorescent (2 modes), Cloudy, Shade and Speedlight.
The EG-CP14 audio/video (A/V) cable provided with the Nikon Coolpix P1 digital camera can be used for connecting the camera to a television and show the captured images on a large size screen. Sharing your special moments with family and friends on different occasions is a matter of taking the camera with you and connecting it as mentioned. The menu of the camera, the set-up menu lets you select between NTSC and PAL, after which you are ready to start the slide show.

Editor's comment:
"The Coolpix P1 is small and light, a nice compact digital camera to carry with you all the time. Despite its small dimensions it has a broad range of innovative features on board. What about wireless communi-cations? Nikon has gained a lot of experience with wireless communications in the professional field and with this experience Nikon was ready to introduce this technique into the world of compact digital cameras. I strongly believe a large group of consumers being directly convinced about the potential wireless communication and digital cameras have to offer. Others need to be convinced by seeing and believing it themselves. Whatever the result may be I already have enjoyed lesser cables in the office with the wireless Internet, I am sure I will be as happy to reduce the amount of cables with my digital imaging workflow as well..."
