DiMAGE X1 Review
DiMAGE X1 - Introduction
We were able to get our hands on the new Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 digital camera for a few hours. To be short: stunning design! At first the camera shows remarkable resemblance with a digital camera like the Nikon Coolpix S1, but just turn the neat camera around and it hits you right in the eye. The back of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is just like a mirror, amazing design, truly unique in its appearance! Konica Minolta developed the Konica Minolta X1 to create a digital camera that has it all in terms of image quality, functions, design, and size. The new DiMAGE X1 is the result of continuous restyling and shaping of the DiMAGE X-series digital cameras. Combined with Konica Minolta's image technology, innovations and an impressive 8 Megapixel resolution the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is there to set a new standard for digital design cameras. The X1 integrates a newly designed optical system, another innovative features from the hands of Konica Minolta's engineers.

For the first time ever in the X series, the DiMAGE X1 offers Anti-Shake functioning to help reduce the effects of camera shake, ensuring clear, steady shots of scenes that are otherwise difficult to shoot by hand such as in low light situations or indoors. Unlike the A and Z series, the DiMAGE X1 boasts a newly developed type of Anti-Shake system that complements its folded optics and allows for a more miniaturization. Offering unrivalled stability, this new type of Anti-Shake system can provide the equivalent of up to 3 EV to help compensate for camera shake, and is effective for taking shots in low light conditions and using slow shutter speeds around 1/6th of a second at wide-angle.

Both Konica Minolta's Anti-Shake systems, this new one in the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 and the CCD-shift mechanism, achieve steady shots without moving any particular lens in the lens group. In other words, these systems achieve Anti-Shake while retaining the performance of the lens that is designed to bring out optimum performance. The Anti-Shake technology from Konica Minolta represents the culmination of a dedication to camera technology.
To accommodate the high resolution while keeping the body as slim as possible, the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1's employs a newly designed "non-protruding" 3X optical zoom lens and delivers a lens focal length of 7.7 to 23.1mm (equivalent to 37 to 111mm in 35mm format) and an aperture range from F3.5 to F3.8. Complementing this exceptional optical system, the Konica Minolta X1 offers two ways to take close-ups: Auto Macro Mode (Shortest shooting distance: 10cm in Wide-angle and 40cm in Telephoto positions), which takes macro shots without having to switch the mode, and Super Macro mode, which captures amazing close-ups as near as 5cm.

The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is equipped with a large, 2.5-inch LCD monitor that gives you a bright, clear view for framing shots and reading the menu screen. Using the Bright LCD backlight function allows you to set the screen 1.5 times brighter, so you can easily see the monitor in bright outdoor locations. Just like on the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X50 and DiMAGE X60 digital cameras, the surface of the Konica Minolta X1's LCD monitor is protected with an easy-to-maintain acrylic panel that is easily wiped clean of dirt.

The DiMAGE Master Lite and Kodak EasyShare software bundled with the X1 allows you to carry out detailed image editing, carry out color matching, and has an intuitive interface that is ideal for beginners. Sharing, printing or making photo CDs have never been so easy.
The Konica Minolta X1 features a 1/1.8-inch CCD image sensor with approximately 8.3 Megapixels, the highest resolution in a compact digital camera currently available (as of June 2005). This resolution ensures you to take 3264x2448 pixel photos, enough resolution to print crisp and detailed enlargements up to A3+ size. Although the housing of the X1 is very compact it features folded optics technology, creating 3x optical zoom in a housing that is less than 20mm in size, actually 19.5mm in width!

To achieve optimum compatibility with its new optics, 8 Megapixel resolution, and 1/1.8-type CCD, the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 uses Konica Minolta's top image processing technology, CxProcess III. With this combination, the DiMAGE X1 is able to reproduce images as clearly and naturally as they appear to your eye. You can enjoy genuine color and tone straight on prints even without manipulation on computers. The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is compatible with widely available Secure Digital memory cards or MultiMedia Cards.
The DiMAGE X1 makes taking clear, high-quality shots effortless with a Digital Subject Program Selection that offers pre-programmed settings for seven common photo scenes: Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, Super Macro, Night Portrait, Night View, and Text. You simply choose the mode best suited to your shooting conditions, and the X1 is ready in an instant with the optimum settings to turn that special moment into a beautiful memory. UHS Continuous Advance captures 640x480-pixel images at up to 10 fps at any image quality setting, making it ideal for capturing fleeting action such as recording a tennis or golf swing. As well, the UHS Progressive Capture mode saves images from the last 1.5 seconds before releasing the shutter button (up to 15 images at 640x480). This means you won't miss photo opportunities during fast moving sporting events.

Editor's comment:
"Over the past few months we have seen several ultra-compact 5 Megapixel stylish designed digital cameras being introduced, but Konica Minolta managed to exceed themselves with a digital camera packed with innovative technology like Anti-Shake, a newly developed lens-system and a high resolution of 8 Megapixels. As soon as we receive a full production model we will come back to you with a full Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 review..."

Without a protruding part, the super-slim, flat body of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 digital camera measures just 95x68x19.5mm (W x H x D), the first time the DiMAGE X series models have achieved a body profile less than 20mm in size. Another key feature of the Konica Minolta X1 is its sophisticated body design. Designers poured their artistic effort into successfully reflecting several key design concepts: a new "advanced" lifestyle that inspires users to think of the camera as more than a photo-taking tool, a body design that is as irresistible to hold and touch as it is to behold, a minimalist approach to controls that complements the clear and elegant appearance, an extravagant approach to incorporating advanced technology, and a sense of modern luxury, expressed definitively through the camera's refined finish. The elegant rounded form of the DiMAGE X1 boasts a sleek, metallic grace you'll want to hold in your hands. The rounded edges fit neatly in your palm, giving you quick familiarity and comfort in hand. Models in silver resonate a futuristic and sophisticated look with a high-end satin finish that perfectly complements the elegant, tactile nature of the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1. Models available in wine red and black boast an exclusive, glossy mirror finish that will evoke a sense of admiration when you see it, almost as if you feel like polishing it.
The Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 is the first-ever Konica Minolta digital camera to come with its own convenient multifunction cradle. Integrating flawlessly with the smooth lines of the Konica Minolta X1, the cradle eliminates cumbersome cable arrangements and provides quick and easy connectivity for uploading and viewing images directly on your Computer or TV. The DiMAGE X1 multifunction cradle can also operate as a battery charger, which can either charge the battery by itself or the battery when it's inside the camera. The cradle can even position the LCD monitor forward so you can use it as an image viewer.

For the first time ever in the X series, the Konica Minolta DiMAGE X1 offers recording of smooth, high-resolution VGA (640x480 dots) movie clips with sound. Anti-Shake technology and auto focus combine to ensure amazingly clear images. While recording, you can get even closer to the action using the 3X optical zoom without losing image quality. The X1 digital camera records movies in JPEG (MOV) format and is compatible with QuickTime for playing images back on a computer.
