With the introduction of the new DiMAGE Xi has the DiMAGE X a big brother to welcome. The new Minolta DiMAGE Xi has some new features that make the camera not only worthwhile for the updated resolution, but also for its neat extra functions. The new DiMAGE Xi is the worlds lightest, thinnest and smallest 3 Megapixel camera with a 3x optical zoom equivalent to 37 - 111mm on a 35mm camera. It weighs only 130 grams (excl. SD card and battery) and measures 8.45 x 7.2 x 2cm. Despite the fact that this new Minolta camera is so ultra-compact it offers a resolution of an effective 3.2 Megapixels. The zoom mechanism is the same as its 2 Megapixel brother, the zoom is on its side within the body. The new Xi has a very fast start-up time of only 1.2 seconds.
The Minolta DiMAGE Xi uses the same ultras-slim battery as the Dimage X. The memo-recorder functions can record audio (mono) with a maximum of 30 minutes/session and when used in combination with the movie function it can record with a maximum of 15 seconds (WAVE). The movie function can record for 35 seconds in mono sound with a frame rate of 15/fps in a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The use of the zoom during the recording of the movie is only possible in a digital variant. The Xi is using a Secure Digital card (16MB included) to store the JPEG (Exif 2.1, TIFF, Motion JPEG (MOV) or WAVE files.
With the 3 Megapixel CCD the new Minolta DiMAGE Xi will produce a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. The combination of quality and images size is 2048 x 1536, 1600 x 1200, 1280 x 960 and 640 x 480 pixels (economy/standard/fine/super fine). The ISO settings are automatic (equivalent to ISO 50 - 160) or manual in ISO 50, 100, 200 or 400. Live images will soon be available when we are visiting the Minolta booth during our report of the Photokina 2002, so stay tuned!
