LetsGoDigital's first look at the new Kodak DCS Pro 14n
Kodak have played a roll in the Photokina show for years, but this Photokina 2002 show Kodak claimed the roll of a star. The introduction of the new Kodak DCS Pro14n was for most of the people a pretty surprise where some of them had to hold their breath for some moment...
Kodak did not only claimed the big part of the show, they also had the most stunning booth of the show. A lot of colourful, blown-up prints, cameras, printers, software and also important a lot of Kodak people who were involved of the development of most of these products, so you had something on your mind or wanted to know the "how and when" questions, Kodak had the answers.

Thanks to our contacts by Kodak we could have a first look of this brand new 14 Megapixel SLR camera. First we have to say that this is a pre-production sample, so nothing of the following images is actually showing the final stage of this product. The first thing we notice is the shape of this body. The body feels, to our surprise, light and its design is quite different when we compare it to its competitors. The grip of this camera feels good and when you pick up this camera for the first time its lies direct comfortable in your hands. Unfortunately we had not that much time, but time enough to shoot some images of the menu structure and body. Furthermore we were, of course :-), sometimes behind some closed doors and all we can say that it would not surprise us that the read/write speed of this Kodak product will be pretty fast. But again, do not conclude anything, cause nothing is official yet!

The Kodak DCS Pro 14n we got our hands on is the camera that has been used to take some pretty impressive images of several models. In this stage Kodak is not willing to publish any image of this camera, because of the pre-production stage of this camera. According to Kodak, they will publish some samples in the upcoming week or so.

The menu structure is divided into two settings; basic and advanced. Basic is an very easy-to-use menu where the beginner or the "not that advanced" user can set some features to its choice, like ISO setting, Resolution setting and display settings. The advanced mode is of course the mode that plays the most important part of the menu structure. There are lots and lots of features to settle and to give you an impression we have published some of the interesting displays. One of the interesting features that the Kodak DSC Pro 14n has is its ERI-JPEG file format. The way it is explained to us is understandable and logical, but when I am honest at this moment I could not repeat again the explanation. Dave Etchells (Imaging Resource), who was also at the Kodak booth where he had his "first hands on", has written in his article about the Kodak an easy to read explanation, so hop on over to read more about the Kodak ERI-JPEG format!
The Pro 14n gets it power from a real compact and flat battery that is inserted in the side of the camera. According to Kodak it should be enough to shoot some 200+ images with a full battery. The images are stored on a CompactFlash card and can simultaneously be stored on a Secure Digital card. Both of these cards supposed to have a great future with lots of capacity increase planned for the near future. Another new setting is the selectable white balance where you have besides the automatic setting, 5 other settings. Each of those setting is again selectable in 3 settings: Standard, Warm & Cool.
Our time was unfortunately too short, so we had to leave Kodak and hop on over to the next meeting. In our mind we think that Kodak has a product in their hands that has the change too close the gap between high-end price and high-end quality and entry-level SLR price and 6 Megapixel quality. If everything goes like it's suppose to go and the Kodak DCS Po 14 could deliver the same overall quality as its competitors, Kodak Pro has with the Kodak DCS Pro 14n a tool in their hands to expand their market, but it depends how it will get received by the (future) customers. We will wait and see how the market will react on this great new Kodak digital camera.
Our good friend Dave Etchells from Imaging Resource, who also visited the show floor and is back in the USA again, has written his first "hands on" article about the new Kodak DCS Pro 14n, so hop on over to Imaging Resource for some more exclusive images and info!
