Samsung unveils ITCAM-7 and VP-D5000i camcorders
During IFA Samsung Electronics unveiled the world's first Hard Disk Drive (HDD) digital camcorder (ITCAM-7), and a cutting-edge converged device (VP-D5000i), that combines a Mini-DV camcorder and high quality digital still camera into one device. Samsung's ITCAM-7 uses a 1.5 GB HDD to store still and motion pictures, as well as music, audio and data files. Holding more than one hour of high-quality video, a built-in USB 2.0 port can transfer content to a computer in only five minutes. The ITCAM-7 saves each video clip as a separate media file, making it easy to locate and organize content. Editing software is also bundled with each ITCAM-7 for consumer convenience. In addition, the ITCAM-7 acts as a portable movie player. An MPEG4 media file can be played back "full frame" at 25 frames per second and 640 x 480 screen resolution on the 2-inch display or a separate TV screen. Through its embedded RCA port, the ITCAM-7 can also connect to a television or VCR to display or record audio-visual content. In addition, other media formats such as MP3 audio are supported for playback.

The VP-D5000i's unique swivel lens mechanism permits easy switching between the two functions; one side of the assembly houses the camcorder lens and sensor while the other side holds the digital still camera mechanism. The digital still camera function creates images with 4.13 mega-pixel CCD resolution. Compared to most digital camcorders, which store low-resolution still images at 640 x 480 pixels, the VP-D5000i produces 2,272 x 1,704 pixel images suitable for large size prints. Additionally, the VP-D5000i's embedded strobe allows still picture taking in low light conditions. Other features include a 3x optical zoom for camera and swivel lens assembly. Images can be conveniently stored on Memory Stick media and transferred through USB ports.

As a digital camcorder, the VP-D5000i features 800K pixel CCD, Mini-DV and MPEG4 recording. The lens allows users the option of a 10x optical or 800x digital zoom. Samsung' s proprietary "Power Night Capture" function greatly improves picture quality under poor light conditions. What's more, the VP-D5000i's two-inch trans-reflective LCD viewfinder ensures optimal clarity even under direct sunlight. Captured video footage is quickly transferred through the IEEE1394 (FireWire) connector.
