Pentax will soon launch three new digital compact cameras
In spite of the fact that Pentax is not represented at one of the halls of the IFA show, they still attracted the attention to their assortment of digital cameras. During the show but at a different location in Berlin, Pentax unveiled their three new models of digital cameras. Two of them are more or less successors of the present models in the Optio series, the third one has a complete new design.
The Pentax Optio S4 is a camera at which the S stands for Styling. The camera is very compact and has an aluminium housing. The Sliding Lens System, first used at the Optio S camera returns in this new model as well. Using this technique made it possible to give the camera a thickness of only 20mm. Despite its flat appearance the Optio S4 is equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens. The resolution is 4 million effective pixels. The interval of release is only 0.01 second. Beside the possibility of recording still images the Pentax Optio S4 is also able to record short video clips and spoken voice through the voice-memo function. The video clips have a maximum recording time of 60 seconds; the recording time of the voice memo function depends on the storage capacity of the memory card. The backside of the camera features a 1.6-inch size LCD monitor with a resolution of 84.000 pixels. The shutter speed is 4 seconds up to a faster shutter speed of 1/2000 second. The minimum focal range in Macro mode is 6cm. The size of the Optio S4 is 83x52x20mm and the weight is 98g (excl. battery and memory card).

Beside the 5x optical zoom lens there is also a 4x digital zoom available, which offers a total range of 20x. The SMC Pentax zoom lens has a focal range of 7.8-39mm, which is the equivalent of 37.5-187.5mm range on a 35mm camera.
