First impression of the new Casio EXILIM EX-Z4
The very successful introduction of the EX-Z3 camera this year is another confirmation for Casio that the EXILIM concept has proved to be a lucky strike. With the introduction of the new EXILIM EX-Z4, Casio has created a broad assortment of compact digital cameras for consumers. The ultra compact EX-Z4 camera with a resolution of 4 million effective pixels tops everything. The EXILIM series of digital cameras are a combination of high-quality performance housed in an impressive compact body. The thin light metal (aluminium) packing of only 23.1mm doesn't give away the possibility of a 3x optical zoom at first glance, but is definitely present. This in combination with a high resolution of 4 Megapixels offers the EXILIM EX-Z4 a very high quality in the most compact size.

I have been able to lay my hands on the new EX-Z4 camera for a few hours and the huge size of the screen on the back of the camera keeps surprising me. The 2-inch LCD monitor has the right size, in my opinion, to let the user re-experience the emotion of the image straight away. Casio has done a good job to start designing the big LCD monitors because it also adds to the user-friendliness of the camera. Its appearance is almost exactly the same as the last camera; the EX-Z3. Also the optical range of 35-105mm (compared to a 35mm camera) has stayed the same. Beside the enhancement of the optical resolution from 3 to 4 Megapixels, the EXILIM EX-Z4 enjoys the very fast start-up time of only 1.6 seconds and a very fast interval of release of 0.01 second. The fast start-up time of the camera enables shooting a picture almost immediately after starting the camera. The on 7 points metering auto focus automatically selects the point that is considered to be the best to be focussed at. The new PAN focus function eliminates the necessary automatic focus which results in an even quicker reaction of the camera when taking pictures.

Also new is taking 3:2 pictures in a resolution of 2304x1536 pixels, which makes printing a 10x15, 13x18, etc. format possible without image editing and therefore without any loss of image, so all in all a lot easier. The Favourite calendar shows a thumbnail of every first image taken at a specific day. Despite the compact size of the camera, it is loaded with all sorts of useful functions, as said before. Beside the possibility of capturing images, the EX-Z4 is also able to record and store moving images with sound at a maximum playing time of 60 seconds. The video clips appear in a resolution of 320x240 pixels. All these functions need energy of course to be able to function. The EX-Z4 uses a renewed Lithium Ion battery that is approx. 20% more economic than the battery of the EX-Z3 camera.
All data is stored on the internal memory of 10MB or on an external Secure Digital or MultiMedia memory card. It is possible to connect the camera onto a television or computer through a dockingstation, so the images can be watched on a big screen of transferred to a computer. The camera also supports the USB Direct Print so images can be printed without interference of a computer. The Casio EXILIM Z4 will appear on the market around September 2003.
