Just gave my FZ20 to my veterinarian daughter, and began using a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ50. The lens no longer retains f/2.8 throughout the range as in the FZ20, but now all movements are internal, making it more compact and less vulnerable. It has a great zoom lens for nature photography, including macro down to 5 cm for intriguing insect photographs, all without several costly lenses. It becomes necessary to remove the lens hood for close-ups, though. Fine-tuning of white balance is useful, though with RAW software provided, subsequent adjustment is said to be also possible. The movable LCD screen useful for awkward positions. The programmable thumb wheels very convenient and quick, but tend to foul while holding camera. The pictures taken against light are not pleasing; bright colours bleed.

I have just upgraded from the FZ5, and WOW what an upgrade. Firstly, the size and feel of the camera are much sturdier. The Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ50 is a great all-rounder with fantastic optics, a fast AF and the function button is very useful to change settings such as ISO, Resolution etc. The picture quality is superb, especially up to ISO400. I really cannot find any fault in this camera, which is a joy to use, and I would recommend it fully, especially to serious / amateur photographers alike and to any one not wanting the expense of a DSLR.
