Samsung NX10 Conclusion

Samsung NX10 review
With the NX10, Samsung has something new to offer, or actually several things. Not only is it the first camera that the brand has developed all by itself, it is also one of the first cameras on the market with changeable lenses, an APS-C sensor, and without a mirror. The Samsung NX10 is not only starting the attack on the Micro Four Thirds System, but also on the traditional SLR camera. This is a daring move, especially because Samsung was previously known for its Pentax clones.

Samsung NX10 system camera
The Samsung NX10 is not an ideal camera for everyone. The amount of setting possibilities, such as noise reduction, is very limited. It is too limited for the control freak and mostly likely for the (semi-) professional photographer as well. The Samsung NX10 is not especially made for that group. The target group is the consumer that wants more than a compact camera, but does not want to have a large camera. That is exactly the market that for example the Olympus PEN PL1 is aiming at. In my eyes, the Samsung NX10 is a fine camera for that target group. It looks pretty traditional, without being boring. It is a nice camera to look at.

Samsung NX10 lenses
The Samsung NX10 is certainly very compact, especially if you put a pancake on the camera. I find that combination not to be scorned. Besides, you get the most out of the camera, as I was pleasantly surprised that the zoom lenses also shoot above average. Definitely where sharpness is concerned, the lenses are amazing in the positive sense. The image quality is also remarkable. It is higher than I had expected. The Samsung NX10 can easily compete with the better SLRs in terms of image quality. It is clever that the color reproduction remains fairly constant for the entire sensitivity range. Samsung knows how to make sensors and how the data is to be processed by the image processor.

Photograph in RAW with the Samsung NX10
I am less enthusiastic about how Samsung goes about with RAW. I do not understand why they do not deliver a RAW converter for Mac. I also do not find it to be a smart move to only choose for your own format. I would have at least offered DNG as an option as well. It is a fine universally employable format, and why would you want to invent the wheel again as a newcomer?

Samsung NX10 AMOLED display
That is actually the biggest criticism on the camera. That the Samsung NX10 is not the fastest in writing data to the memory card is not such a problem. I think that most users will not run into this problem. They will mostly enjoy the camera, as it is very pleasant to use. It has a logical control and a simplified menu that certainly help along. And do not forget about the large screen. It is truly great; I have not seen such a beautiful screen on the back of a camera before. AMOLED could become the future.

Samsung NX10 review conclusion
I have to honestly admit that I was skeptical about the Samsung NX10 when the camera was announced. The doubts all quickly disappeared during the test. The Samsung NX10 is a surprisingly good camera. The few drawbacks could not spoil the fun I had in photographing with it. For me the Samsung NX10 is a remarkable surprise, and I definitely recommend it!

Samsung NX10 RAW & JPEG files
The Samsung NX10 produces quite large files due to the large amount of pixels, especially if you shoot in RAW, or as in my case, in RAW and JPEG at the same time. The JPEG files are basically usable, but with RAW you have more possibilities to correct mistakes. The amount of settings in compression is great and you also have an acceptable amount of choices in terms of dimensions and you can choose from two image ratios. That way you can influence the amount of photos that fit onto a card. I always choose for the highest quality. In that case a card with a minimum of 4GB in storage space is not exaggerated.

Considering 1GB storage capacity:
14 Megapixels - 4592x3056 pixels - 3:2 - RAW - 35 pictures
