Pentax Optio WPi Review conclusion

Pentax Optio WPi digital camera
If you are looking for an easy to operate digital camera, you will make the right choice when choosing for the Optio WPi. The camera isn't equipped with real manual settings, but still offers an abundance of auto possibilities. The built-in intelligent software offers creative users sufficient tools to get more out of the camera than the standard snapshot. The structure of the camera seems logical. Compared to its predecessors not a lot has changed; the increase of resolution from 5 to 6 Megapixels is the main alteration. Is it necessary? Of course not, but the digital evolution can't be stopped, so 6 Megapixels will become more of a standard than on previous generations. The optical zoom of 3x is quite standard and for the normal image it works fine. From Macro to Landscape and Portrait; all possibilities are available on the Optio WPi.

Pentax WPi - Image Quality & ISO
The camera's response to the actions of the user is average to speedy. The image quality is fine, the default sharpening somewhat strong; it could be reduced a little. Colour saturation is in control. The ISO sensitivity settings do have a fine quality/noise ratio up to 200 ISO but higher ISO increases the noise. In combination with a too strong sharpening the quality diminishes. The optical lens performs as can be expected from a lens like this, with fine sharpness and detail. The corners at wide-angle are somewhat soft, but zooming to tele makes it disappear. Some distortion is visible in wide-angle but also this disappears when zooming in. The so-called purple fringing found on details rich of contrast in an image (chromatic aberration) hardly exists on the Pentax Optio WPi, which is a great achievement.

Pentax WPi camera - Shooting modes
Surprising is the fact that despite the limited manual setting possibilities, the Pentax Optio WPi user is still in control of how he/she wants to control the camera. An extensive pack of shooting modes is available and the user can also store many settings in the memory of the camera so after deactivating and activating the camera again, these settings will be recognized by the camera and don't have to be selected again. These details make this simple entry level camera a mature user-friendly one at which enhanced creativity belongs to the possibilities.

Pentax Optio WPi waterproof housing
Personally I enjoyed working with the Pentax Optio WPi. The waterproof housing makes photographing in and on the water a real pleasure. In practice, handling the WPi camera is easy and delivers fine image quality. The resolution suffices to print some enlargements whenever you feel like it that can be edited in the camera prior to printing. The Pentax Optio will appeal to the average user and its water- and dustproof features make the camera interesting for use during holidays or weekend trips in and around the water. Photographing underwater is fun; a lot can be discovered and thanks to digital photography infinite images can be taken during snorkelling. All in all the Pentax Optio WPi is an attractive digital camera, recommendable for everybody who loves effortless shooting!

SanDisk Ultra II Plus secure digital memory card
Lately when testing digital cameras I have been using a very special and extremely handy Secure Digital memory card; the SanDisk Ultra II Plus. The design of the card is similar to that of the SD standard memory card; on top the card features an additional function. Having removed the card from the Pentax Optio WPi digital camera, you can bend it in the middle after which a USB interface is freed. Enabling you to insert the card directly from you camera in a free USB port of a notebook or computer without the need for a connection to the camera or a card reader. In practice I notice myself using the card more and more to transport data such as photos, but also documents, to and from.
