Panasonic Lumix DMC GF1 Conclusion

Panasonic Lumix GF1 digital system camera
At the time of writing, there are only two truly compact Micro Four Thirds System cameras available. Both are similar when it comes to functions and dimensions. Olympus and Panasonic are the promoters and developers of the Micro Four Thirds system, and are thus faced with the difficult task to convince the traditionally established camera market that such a system is the answer to the consumer's demand. There are mainly two manufacturer battlefields; one of which is led by Nikon and Canon, while the other consists of several small brands trying to conquer market share. The impact of Micro Four Thirds with the arrival of the Panasonic GF1, and also the Olympus E-P1, is significant. The question is how and to what extent Micro Four Thirds will develop.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 Micro Four Thirds camera
As far as we are concerned; we have utmost confidence that Micro Four Thirds will make it. Everything seems to fall into place; the ease of a compact camera and the quality and possibilities of a DSLR. The Panasonic Lumix GF1 simple meets all of these requirements. A true gem of a design and a solid construction, immediately show the quality level. The technique Panasonic uses, whether it's the fast contrast AF detection or the user-friendly programs which comprise high-quality intelligent solutions, make the GF1 a beautiful camera that is extremely pleasant to use.

Image quality of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1
The image quality of the Panasonic DMC-GF1 is high. And if you opt for the RAW format, you will soon find out that there's more to this camera than just a standard JPEG picture. The resemblance to a standard DSLR is made quickly, and it's only the higher ISO of 1600 and higher, that is not able to keep up entirely with values that a large sensor camera is able to achieve. However, we are still satisfied with these results.

Pleasure to shoot with the Panasonic Lumix GF1
While shooting with the Panasonic Lumix GF1, we noticed only one thing; the pleasure of shooting. It is difficult to explain, but shooting with the GF1 in practice is in a way an experience that stays with you. This experience cannot be expressed in a test result and moreover, it is biased. However, I know that I am not the only one with this experience. The combination of compact size, the operation, the built-in effect filters and, not entirely unimportant; the use of a fixed focal length (f/1.7 20mm), really makes you experience photography in a different way.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 viewfinder
Is there simply nothing left to wish for? Of course there is; I'd like to have a higher quality electronic viewfinder instead of the viewfinder Panasonic now offers. There are several developments in progress in that field, which makes us expect the next generation will be of a higher quality. In addition, the difference between RAW and JPEG should become less, by improving the algorithms responsible for the final JPEG quality.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 review conclusion
Other than this, Panasonic has delivered a great camera with the GF1, and the brand deserves nothing but praise. The path to success is often lonely, but the way the Panasonic complies the Micro Four Thirds system with the design of cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GF1, is promising for the future. The Panasonic GF1 is interesting for various user groups. For the DSLR photographer who wants to shoot with a manageable camera without losing too much image quality, as well as for the amateur photographer looking for more than that one advanced compact camera. In fact; it is a camera for everyone on the hunt for the combination; small size and great quality. Enough reasons to put the GF1 high on your wish-list!

Panasonic Lumix DMC GF1Flash Memory

Panasonic Lumix DMC GF1 Flash Memory

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 memory
The Panasonic DMC-GF1 stores pictures in RAW, JPEG, or a combination of both. For storing JPEG in the highest quality, about 7 MB is needed, whereas for RAW about 15MB, and the combination RAW/JPEG is about 22MB large. So depending on what you choose, if JPEG is satisfactory and if the pictures will not be edited afterwards, a 2GB card will suffice. However, if you prefer shooting in RAW, you will need at least 4GB SDHC to work with. Prices of memory cards are very reasonable nowadays, so investing in a high capacity and fast SDHC card is certainly recommended.

Considering 4GB of storage capacity:
