Panasonic Lumix DMC FX150 Conclusion

High resolution Panasonic Lumix FX150 digital camera
Now what is the surplus value of the high resolution on a compact camera such as the Panasonic LUMIX FX150? Not a lot, in fact, even unnecessary for 99% of the pictures that you will make with this type of camera, and the high resolution will certainly not add to the image quality. Yet, 14 Megapixels, that doesn't sound bad, and perhaps it will satisfy the user to have more pixels in his pocket than the show-off with the large and heavy digital SLR camera hanging from his neck. I must admit that it is quite an odd procedure; the DSLR camera aiming for quality is not easily abused by marketing, on the contrary, it is profiled as a high quality product. Take the new Panasonic LUMIX G1 for example, a system camera of the house, that offers a standard resolution of 12 Megapixels. Place the FX150 next to it, and it might be a real problem for the seller to explain the resolution-tale.

Extremely user friendly Panasonic compact camera
This may sound a little negative, however, I cannot think of another reason than pure marketing strategy for the amount of pixels. What's left is a nicely designed compact camera with an extremely user-friendly operation. The Panasonic LUMIX line grew to an unparalleled popularity over the past few years, and that is an astonishing achievement for a non-photographic company such as Panasonic. Or should I say: was, since photography seems to have become one of the things that makes Panasonic stand out most.

Panasonic Lumix FX150 : easy and straightforward
I enjoyed working with the Panasonic LUMIX FX150 in practice. Ease, a compact build and a light enough weight to stuff this little camera into the smallest of handbags or pockets. A camera to carry with you at all times. Operation is easy and straightforward. The many auto programs make digital photography simple, as it is supposed to be. The effective iA mode even takes things a step further, allowing the photographer to only frame an object and press the shutter release button.

ISO sensitivity of the Panasonic Lumix FX150
Technical tests show some points of improvement for the Panasonic FX150. At first, not entirely unexpected due to the extremely high resolution, noise is visible as soon as from ISO 400. Safe margin is ISO 100-400 and that also goes for the dynamic range. This makes it clear immediately that you are given a considerable amount of pixels on one hand, but that on the other, you have to sacrifice noise quality and dynamic range. The effective image stabilisation system helps the camera to shoot without having to use high ISO values in well-lit circumstances. By the way, you can also set a maximum ISO value in the menu of the camera. Furthermore, the lens suffers from chromatic aberration, but other than that it performs greatly.

Panasonic DMC-FX150 a interesting Lumix camera
Panasonic proves with the LUMIX DMC-FX150 that they are able to deliver compact cameras in a wide array. Whether it's an absolute entry-level model, a high-end compact like the Panasonic LX3, a Megazoom or a high resolution FX150, the LUMIX series leaves nothing more to desire. If high resolution is the thing for you, you should go for the FX150, however, do keep in mind that 'more' is not always the equivalent of 'better'. There are more interesting LUMIX cameras with a better resolution/quality ratio and equipped with features just as smart.

Photographing in RAW and JPEG
Due to the high resolution of the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX150, the file sizes increase automatically. In highest resolution and lowest compression, which is the highest quality, a file will quickly grow to approximately 17MB. That is the case for the RAW format. If you shoot in RAW+JPEG, the size will be around 19MB and shooting in the highest JPEG quality, the file becomes approximately 4.5MB. The RAW file sizes are not half bad, therefore we advise to use a card with a minimum of 2GB of capacity and preferably 4GB.

Considering 2GB of storage capacity:
