Olympus FE-5020 digital compact camera
Sometimes, against the odds, you find yourself expecting too much from certain entry-level digital cameras. The Olympus FE-5020 is one of those cameras. Olympus has a long history when it comes to photography. Their know-how and experience in the field of imaging is huge. Olympus does not have to be taught anything about lenses either. Knowing all this, you actually have already created an image of the camera in the back of your mind before it has actually proven its features in practice.
Olympus FE-5020 camera design
The design of the Olympus FE-5020 is a tremendous success, the camera looks fresh, and it certainly does not have a cheap look. The compact size and light weight are a nice combination to take along with you regularly. The operation seems convenient at first glance, yet after some hours of fun, you'll find that some features are not that easy. For example; the buttons look modern, however, in certain situations they provide poorly readable symbols. Also, the logic behind the operation seems to lack at times, for example in the case of the capture mode.
Olympus FE-5020 picture quality
After shooting in practice, the results are actually a bit disappointing. The picture quality is acceptable and in optimal lighting situations fine, however, the Olympus FE-5020 does not stand out when it comes to performance. Although sensitivity values range up to ISO 1600, noise occurs when using higher ISO than 400. We also find color shifting in the pictures, which soon becomes slightly disappointing. We simply expected just a little more image quality from the Olympus FE-5020, even for an entry level camera.
Creative photography with the Olympus FE-5020
One feature that the Olympus FE-5020 certainly stands out for, are the built-in filters. Even though they are not so easy to use and the occasional difficulty does occur while judging the small reproductions on the screen, it still leads to more creative photography. To some users, it may only be a silly thing, but we can imagine the more creative photographer really appreciating the filters and appraising their value.
Olympus FE-5020 review conclusion
The Olympus FE-5020 is an entry-level digital camera and will thus easily be able to find its way to the target group. The owner will own a solidly built camera, and one that looks cool on all fronts for that matter. Those who are still to gain their first digital photography experience will undoubtedly be able to take their first shots with the Olympus FE5020 without much of a problem. Yet, we would also recommend you to consider cameras in a similar price range (and less) before making a choice, because there are certainly other candidates that score better than the somewhat averagely performing Olympus FE-5020.
Olympus FE-5020 supports JPEG file format
The 12 Megapixels of resolution are stored in JPEG format. RAW file format is not found on the Olympus FE5020, which is quite logical since this format is more likely to serve both the enthusiastic photographer and the pro. The Olympus FE-5020 provides Fine and Normal compression, so the file size is easy to adjust. Memory card prices are relatively low; hence storage should not be a problem. As a result, we really can't find a reason to opt for lesser quality. Count on a minimum of 1GB storage capacity.
