Canon PowerShot S3 IS review : The PowerShot S3 IS is the successor of the PowerShot S2 IS, which was subjected to an array of tests in one of our previous in-depth digital camera reviews. Digital cameras such as the Canon S3 IS enjoy a considerable popularity, which arises from the fact that they have so much to offer for a relatively low price. The Canon S3 IS features, for instance, an impressive 12x optical zoom, equipped with an image stabiliser, which enables hand-held shots even when working with long focal lengths. The rotating and tilting monitor allows you to capture your images from virtually every imaginable position and angle. The resolution of 6 Megapixels is more than sufficient to produce a beautiful A4 print.

Canon S3 IS - Image stabilizer
The increased sensitivity allows the use of faster shutter speeds, thereby reducing the effects of camera shake and subject blur during hand-held photography in low light. Adding to that unshakeable quality is the Canon S3 IS digital camera's shift-type optical image stabilization system. Unlike electronic image stabilizer systems that typically cause degradation of image quality, Canon based its Lens Shift type of Image Stabilizer system on the advancements in the development and refinement of Canon's EF and video lenses.
Canon PowerShot S3 - Optical zoom lens
The Canon S3 IS digital camera's 12x zoom lens has an equivalent film focal length of 36-432 mm (f/2.7 at wide angle and f/3.5 at telephoto). Despite the extraordinary range of the zoom lens, it retracts securely into the camera when it is powered down. The optical zoom can be augmented by the camera's 4x digital zoom raising the maximum (35mm equivalent) focal length to that of a 1728mm lens. What's more, this UD lens features a high-speed silent zoom function powered by a micro motor USM drive, increasing ease of quiet, non-intrusive image capture. For extreme close-ups, the camera's macro and super macro mode permit shooting a subject as close as 0-inches from the end of the lens barrel.
Canon S3 IS - Attractive type of digital camera
The Canon PowerShot S3 IS is one of a truly unique group of digital cameras, and is particularly suitable for photographers that seek functionality, yet not the costs and size of a digital SLR camera. Naturally, the fact that the Canon PowerShot S3 IS allows you to zoom in to a great extend, should be looked upon as an enormous advantage; after all, this means you no longer need to invest in the extremely pricey lenses that the SLR camera requires. Image stabilisation is an indispensable factor when working with such long focal lengths, which is why you are likely to see at least one form of stabilisation on practically every single model in this segment of the Megazoom cameras. Remarkable however, is that the amount of megazoom models seems to dwindle. Apparently, manufacturers are failing to see the benefits, even though this type of digital camera remains very attractive to the consumer.
Canon PowerShot S3 IS review
All the positive sides of the PowerShot S2 IS seem to have found their way to its successor. The Canon PowerShot S3 is an exceptionally compact digital camera that is easily carried along. The DIGIC II processor ensures a fast and proper processing of the image information, just as was the case with its predecessor. The Canon S3 IS camera can be equipped with a variety of accessories, such as an external HF-DC1 flash, a tele converter, a wide-angle adapter and a lens hood.
