JVCJVC is introducing a new 1.18 Megapixel digital video camera particularly designed for the European market with their new GR-PD1 — a state of the art digital video camera that is able to record PAL Progressive 625 scanning line 16:9 wide-screen images in MPEG-2 format on MiniDV cassette, and comes bundled with a full set of creative software including applications for non-linear editing and authoring to DVD. The “retina” of this camera’s eye is a powerful combination of a 1.18 Megapixel Progressive Scan CCD and JVC’s patented progressive digital filter technology, both the result of JVC’s years of research in the field. The JVC GR-PD1 has a pixel array of 1280 x 659 (for moving images) and 1280 x 960 (for stills).
The new JVC video camera provides progressive scanning to sample the entire picture at once, this CCD has an uncanny ability to capture detailed images without interline motion blur resulting from interlace scanning.

The Hybrid Complementary-Primary progressive colour filter system developed by JVC employs a filter matrix overlaying the CCD’s picture elements including two complementary colours Yellow and Cyan (Ye and Cy), one primary colour Green (Gr), and clear. Shifting one pixel at a time across the CCD and combining these together in pairs for brightness, and blocks of four for colour, results in maximum resolution. This system’s superior ability to sample both Luminance (Y) and Chroma information (RGB) results in colour performance nearly identical to using three CCDs, proving that it is possible to deliver broadcast level quality with a single CCD.

High efficiency 6-frame Group Of Pictures (GOP) MPEG compression allows the same recording time for MPEG-2 as standard DV compression, so with a 60 minute MiniDV cassette the user will be able to record 60 minutes of MPEG-2 or DV signals.

With almost no variance in brightness, from F1.8 at full wide and F1.9 at full telephoto, it is able to offer a higher level of fundamental image-gathering performance. High-precision multi-coated all-glass optics ensure low-distortion, ghost-free images with high periphery resolution and brightness, as well as high edge-to-edge colour purity across the entire zoom range. Its built-in optical image stabiliser provides ample zooming capability coupled with the non-degrading image stabilisation of an optical system.

While 625/25p and 50p images are viewable on the latest display devices, the down-converter converts images to conventional PAL 625i broadcast standard video viewable on regular TVs. The down-converter converts images to conventional PAL 625i broadcast standard video.

The camera’s grip section rotates up to 90 degrees. The grip adjusts its position to suit the operator during shooting, with smooth, uninterrupted motion from high- to low-angle, enabling more stable shooting at all times, without removing their hand from the grip, with fingertip zoom and auto/manual focus rings, auto/manual white balance, auto/manual exposure and shutter speed features.

Included in the GR-PD1 provided accessories is the MPEG Edit Studio® Pro LE MPEG-2 HD editing software package. This MPEG2 transport stream editing software provides frame accurate editing capabilities using the magic of short 6 frame GOP MPEG compression. The provided software also allows video buffs to burn their content down to DVDs with the ImageMixer DVD application, and view and share their digital movies on most available DVD players for an experience just like being in a cinema.
