PMDAPMDA honors photo industry notables : The PhotoImaging Manufacturers & Distributors Association (PMDA) recently presented its prestigious annual PMDA Awards at a gala dinner held at the Caribe Royal Hotel in Orlando during PMA 2006. The Photo Kiosk won “Person of the Year” for its contributions to the rapid increase in photo printing at retail. Accepting the award were a group of kiosk manufacturers and top installing retailers, including Hank Hayashi, Fuji Photo Film, USA; Nikki Zamgrone from Eastman Kodak; Grant Pill, CVS; and Joe Lizuzzo and Sharon Wibben from Walmart. “The Photo Kiosk, while an unconventional pick for Person of the Year, is one of today’s most influential players.

Like a person, the Photo Kiosk conveniently stands at a multitude of retail stores, waiting to help people easily improve and make their digital prints and enlargements that will serve as memories on paper for future generations,” stated Stacie Errera, Chief Marketing Officer, Tamron USA, Inc. and President of PMDA. PMDA also presented it “Technical Achievement Award” to Naoki Tomino from Nikon Corp. Tomino was honored for his part in the development and design of a number of highly advanced and sophisticated film and digital camera and technologies. His engineering expertise, design vision and leadership skill have played an essential role in Nikon’s success.

PMDA - Photo-imaging publishing
Photo Industry Reporter’s cofounders, Rudy Maschke and Ed Wagner were bestowed the association’s “Norman C. Lipton Lifetime Achievement Award.” Each, with over 65 years in photo-imaging publishing at the respective ages of 82 and 85, are still going strong as the publishers emeritus of Photo Industry Reporter, a publication they founded in 1992 virtually single-handedly and ran until mid-2005. The two redefined the basic concepts of trade publications and helped transform the industry into a dynamic interactive community. “It is a tremendous honor for me to be here tonight to accept this wonderful award,” said Ed Wagner. “To paraphrase that great Yankee Hall of famer Lou Gehrig, I feel like I am the luckiest man in the world! And among the many things I feel lucky for is partnering up with Rudy Maschke, who put up with my nonsense for more than 40 years while developing PTN Publishing and Photo Industry Reporter into two very successful publishing companies.”

Graham Nash - Award winning photographer
Also honored at the event were Graham Nash, award-winning photographer and legendary member of the rock group Crosby, Stills, & Nash and his partner, master printmaker Mac Holbert of Nash Editions, who were awarded the PMDA “Visionary Award” for inventing digital fine art printing. In accepting the Visionary Award, Nash and Holbert acknowledged the people that helped make digital fine art printing possible. “We’d like to thanks our wives, Susan & Ruthanne, for their patience and support; Charles Wehrenberg for his vision; David Coons for his genius; Jack Duganne for his guidance; Al Lucchese and Steve Boulter from IRIS Graphics for their revolutionary technology; Henry Wilhelm for his critical research; all of our friends at Epson including Dan Steinhardt, Trevor Lee, Mark Radogna and Pam Barnett; and of course, our Nash Editions employees: John Bilotta, Chris Pan Abbe, Ming Tshing, Kumi Higo and Lisette Kennedy, whom were instrumental in co-developing the digital fine art printing revolution.”

Digital photography - Output technologies
Best known as a founding member of the rock group Crosby, Stills, & Nash, Graham Nash (in conjunction with Mac Holbert), also developed a parallel career as a photographer. Although excited with the potential of digital photography, Nash and Holbert were disappointed with the limitations of existing digital output technologies. To combat this, they co-developed unique methods of outputting Nash’s black & white photos by experimenting with scanning and manipulating images on a computer using an Iris 3047 printer, thereby creating the digital fine art market.

WHNPA wins photographer award
“The Photographer Award” was given to the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA), whose members have covered major world events, traveling with presidents, photographing royalty, diplomats and newsmakers since the organization’s inception in 1921. At the forefront of the video and photographic technology, they have recorded some of the world’s greatest moments. Susan Walsh, President of WHNPA, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
