Olympus SP-500 UZ review at Photoxels : DIWA member Yin Wong from Photoxels has reviewed the Olympus SP-500 UZ digital camera. The Olympus SP 500 features 6 Megapixels, 21 scene modes, auto exposure and full manual control and aperture and shutter priority. The Olympus SP-500 UZ boasts a bright (1:2.8-3.7) 10x optical zoom that covers a 38-380mm focal range (35mm camera equiv.). The Olympus SP-500UZ digital camera features an extra-large 6.4cm LCD for framing shots, and naturally, also to enjoy comfortable viewing of the results. From iESP autofocus through to spot and multi-spot AF with a selectable AF area offering 143 points and, of course, manual focus, photographers dictate the level of control they require.

Olympus SP500 - Image quality
According to Yin Wong: "We find the overall image quality of the Olympus SP-500 to be good to very good, though highlights tend to be blown. The Olympus SP-500 can focus in Super Macro mode to as close as 3 cm (1.18 in.) but it has a hard time doing so in low-light, even with the AF-assist ON (in fact, the AF assist light cannot reach the subject due to the long lens barrel). Noise is low at ISO 80 and ISO 100. At ISO 200, noise becomes visible and at ISO 400, it is visible as splotches of colours, especially in the black areas."
Olympus SP-500 - Operation and Lens
Yin Wong continues: "CA is visible in very strong highlights everyday situations. In the shot above, CA is visible at the red square in the centre of the picture (reproduced at 100% crop at bottom right). Startup and shot-to-shot times are average at about 2 sec. Autofocus is pretty fast and precise at wide-angle even in low-light situations; at the long end of the telephoto, it takes about 2 sec. to lock focus. The back is well organized: there is an extra large 2.5 in. LCD monitor, and the controls are on the right side, adequately well spaced out. There is enough space for the thumb to rest and hold the camera firmly. The handling is comfortable and secure." You want to learn more about the Olympus digital camera? About Photoxels
Photoxels was founded in 2002 by MyKhanh Wong (Owner, Editor) and Yin Wong (Contributing Editor), the editors behind Photoxels. In 2001, we went on the Web to learn about digital cameras like everyone else. But it seems that the more we read about digital cameras, the more reviews we scrutinized, and the more we searched... the more confused we became. If we were somewhat confused about which digital cameras to buy before visiting the digital camera review sites, we became even more confused after reading most of the (very) technical reviews. Slowly, one article and one review at a time, we pieced together what were really important to know about digital cameras and clarified many of the digital photography-related terminology. We decided to share what we learned on the Internet, and Photoxels was born.
