Steve's DigicamsNikon Coolpix S4 review at Steves Digicams : Our good friends at Steves Digicams have published their review of the Nikon Coolpix S4 digital camera. The Nikon S4 digital camera delivers the imaging capability of 6.0 effective Megapixels. A stylish camera designed for active people, the Nikon S4 camera packs a high Megapixel count, a large LCD monitor and zoom capability into a swivelling body that allows independent movement of the lens and LCD sections. The Nikon Coolpix S4 features a 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens whose versatility in composition takes it beyond other cameras in its class. Its 38-380mm performance (35mm equivalent) gives the user the freedom to capture everything from extreme close-ups to architecture and landscapes.
Nikon Coolpix S4 review at Steves DigicamsNikon S4 - Optical zoom lens
According to Steve Digicams: "The internal 10x optical zoom lens covers a 35mm equivalent range of 38 - 380mm, offering a great deal of versatility for composing your shots. The moderate 38mm wide angle extreme allocates pleasing landscapes and group portraits, while the 380mm telephoto end of the zoom range will help bring your distant subjects up close and personal. I found that there was noticeable barrel distortion present at full wide angle, but almost no pincushioning present at the telephoto end of the lens."

Nikon Coolpix S4 camera - Steves Digicams review conclusion
Steve continues: "Image quality was good for a 6-megapixel consumer model. Using its 6M High mode, we captured relatively sharp images with good exposure. However it does sometimes over expose objects of high contrast (snow or white buildings) and there was visible edge blurring in a large majority of our samples. When shooting indoors, you will have to deal with the short range of its tiny flash (approx. 10 feet.) It seemed to work well as a fill-in flash or when shooting close-up individual portraits. The S4's 640x480 QuickTime movie mode was disappointing. Our video samples showed large amounts of compression noise, almost as if you zoomed in on a 320x240 clip."
