|Kyocera announces Finecam S3R camera|
Mark Peters : November 20th 2003 - 16:51 CET
Today Kyocera introduced its latest digital model, the Finecam S3R. The Finecam S3R features 3.17 Megapixels and is equipped with the "RTUNE" image processor, which offers the fast full-memory continuous shooting at 3.1 frames/sec. Thanks to the new "RTUNE" image processor, the Kyocera Finecam S3R, 3.17 Megapixel digital camera, offers the fast full-memory continuous shooting (When using a high speed SD memory card with a transfer speed of 10MB/second or higher. All of memory capacity may not be used depending on shooting conditions. Continuous shooting speed may be reduced in flash shooting, digital zooming and date imprinting mode.) at 3.1 frames/sec and high image quality with rich gradation.|
The fast full-memory continuous shooting is especially helpful when capturing children, pets or sports actions, because the user can take continuous shots and then select the best frame. |
In addition, the S3R offers a vast array of very flexible functions such as scene modes to suit any type of shooting conditions by one touch, movie mode with sound that can be recorded in VGA until the memory card is full (when using a high speed SD memory card with a transfer speed of 10MB/second or higher).
Main features of Kyocera Finecam S3R are:
Effective 3.1 Megapixels with fast full-memory continuous shooting
The Finecam S3R employs a CCD with effective 3.17 Megapixels (1/1.8 square pixels, using a primary color filter). Bright and beautiful color can be reproduced. And also images can be captured at a rate of 3.1 frames/sec at the highest image quality setting until the memory card capacity is reached. In addition, the LCD monitor allows the user to follow the action without stress even in continuous shooting mode.
High-performance 3x optical, 8.4x digital zoom
The high-performance 7.3-21.9mm (35mm equivalent approx. 35-105mm) 3x optical zoom offers a projection resolution of 200/mm or higher at the image center. The lens includes special low-dispersion glass and four aspheric elements and combines a compact size and high performance through the technology developed this manufacturer of optics. The camera provides high quality images close to the ones taken by a 35mm camera in landscape, anniversary, portrait shooting etc. When the optical 3x zoom is combined with 2.8x digital zoom, the camera can take pictures with a total magnification of 8.4x zoom, and also 8x zoom is available in playback mode.
Advanced image gradation rendering thanks to the new image processor
Until today, the level of each RGB color is generally adjusted by the white balance adjustment after analog image information from a CCD is converted into digital signals. In this way, the uneven signal level of each RGB color is adjusted digitally forcedly and is a cause of bad image quality such as tone jump in case of a lack of the signal level in a dark shadow area. The new image processor incorporated into the Finecam S3R adjusts the output level for each RGB color at the analog signal stage and converts it into a digital signal to faithfully reproduce the rich image gradation rendering of the original image.
Reduction of color noise in 16-bit A/D calculations
The A/D conversion of analog image information into digital signals is performed with accuracy of 16 bits internally, and outputted as 12 bits. Since detailed resolution reduces color noise, which tends to occur in a single color or in a dark area of an image, it faithfully reproduces subtle darkness and lightness as well as shades and shadows of color.
Scene button for the mode setting suitable to the shooting scene
The button to select the most suitable shooting mode from six modes of Standard, Sports Action, Night View, Night Portrait, Macro and Landscape is incorporated. For example, the combination of Sports Action mode and continuous shooting won’t miss a fleeting moment.
Continuous auto-focus and short shutter lag time
Continuous auto-focus making sure to capture moving subjects is available. In Continuous AF mode, with power on, the subject is kept in focus continuously. And also, the click to click time is 0.07 seconds, which is similar to the speed of a 35mm SLR camera.
VGA movie mode with sound
Movie mode (30 frames per sec.) is available up to the maximum capacity of memory card. The movie can be saved in AVI file format and can be easily replayed in the camera body, TV or computer (QuickTime 4.1 or later version is required). When the camera is connected to a television, a detailed and smooth movie can be replayed at 30fps/VGA full screen
Various shooting functions, including macro mode down to 12cm
The macro mode enables close-ups down to 12cm in both the telephoto and wide-angle lens settings. In the telephoto mode, the user can fill the image area with a subject measuring approx. 3.4cm x 4.5cm. In addition, 4 flash modes (Auto flash, Red-eye reduction auto flash, Fill-in flash, Flash-off), color modes (Color, Sepia, B/W), white balance (Auto, Daylight, Tungsten, Cloudy, Fluorescent, Preset), sharpness (+3, +2, +1, standard, -1), chroma (standard, +, -) etc., are also available. Exposure compensation is also possible in the range of +/- 2.0EV.
Customized startup screen function to use a personalized startup screen
The S3R offers a customized startup screen function. With this function, a captured image can be used as a personalized startup screen. Every time the camera is turned on, the image will be displayed.
Image resize for easy communication via email, mobile phones or PDAs
Image resize function enables the user to resize a single or all of their images within the camera. This makes it easier to handle images via email, mobile phones or PDAs (320 x 240 or 160 x 120 pixels). The user can select the resizing area (full, 1/4 or 1/16) by using the cross selection button. This function is convenient for reviewing images on PDA equipment with a SD memory card slot.
Easy to use menu selection
Information and menu selection in recording and playback modes is graphically displayed on the LCD monitor. The various mode settings can be operated by cross selection button and return button while viewing the LCD monitor. The S3R realizes the intuitive and easy operation with the multilayered menu structure.
The S3R is supplied with a USB connection cable to transfer large image files from camera to PC. The camera supports the mass-storage class USB interface, so files can be read at high speed on PC and can be easily reproduced like the hard disk of PC. The camera can be connected to PC directly using a USB cable without installation of a driver except Windows98 and 98SE.
The street price of this new Kyocera camera will be around Euro 399.
