According to an announcement made by GFK Marketing Services: Samsung Electronics Co. today said it has launched mass-production of large capacity memory cards in the 512-megabyte and 256-megabyte class. the large-capacity memory cards are multimedia cards (MMCs), which are widely used for storage for mobile handsets, digital cameras, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and MP3 players, company officials said. Three kinds of MMCs, 512MB, 256MB and downsized 256MB, will be mass-produced, they added. The 512MB MMC, for instance, is capable of storing the equivalent of 500 3 Megapixel digital camera pictures, in addition to 130 four-minute MP3 files and 30 minutes of VGA-class moving pictures. VGA stands for video graphics array.

Samsung officials said the company aims to maintain its competitive advantage in all types of memory cards on the basis of its successful development of the world's best 70-nanometer, 4-gigabyte NAND flash chip.
In 2004, the world's largest memory chipmaker is planning to mass-produce ultra high-speed MMCs, as well as low-voltage MMCs that can operate at both 1.3 or 1.8 volts and save power consumption by up to 60 per cent, company officials said. |
