CeBIT 2006 without Sony : According to Manfred Gerdes, director Sony Germany, Japanese electronics giants Sony will not attend the CeBIT 2006, the world's biggest technology fair held annually in Hanover, Germany in 2006. "The CeBIT 2006 is not the right platform for us," Manfred Gerdes told the German newspaper Die Welt. He hinted that the CeBIT fair, which takes place every March, was out of step with the fast-moving world of technology and electronics. "In order to present new consumer products, we should really take part in a fair every three months for technology information products and every six months for electronic entertainment products."

Sony's withdrawal from the CeBit, which drew 480,000 visitors this year, follows a similar announcement from European electronics giant Philips, which prefers exhibiting at Berlin's IFA electronic fair. Gerdes said Sony's decision was not related to its restructuring programme, saying "when we want to gain market share, it makes no sense to try to save money on marketing." In Germany, Sony has already cut its salary budget and scrapped 600 jobs. The company plans to announce further cost-saving measures at the end of October.
Cebit trade show - Information and Telecommunications technology
Although the CeBIT event has topics that are certainly Sony related the 2006 CeBIT event will be without them. Last year High Definition (HD) was a hot topic. At CeBIT the entire product spectrum, from shooting and editing to playback of high-definition video material, was on display. On the computer front, notebooks continue to gain in ascendancy over PCs. Exhibitors showcased numerous business models powered by the latest-generation technology with faster memory access, enhanced performance and minimized energy consumption. Sony on September 22 announced a global restructuring programme which envisions cutting 10,000 jobs, closing or selling 11 factories, streamlining administration and reviving its core electronics business. The company has forecast a loss of 10 billion yen (90 million dollars / 75 million euros) for the financial year to March 2006.
About CeBIT
Throughout the past 20 years, thousands of suppliers and users from all over the world have come together every year in the early spring at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. Looking back, the birth of CeBIT on 12 March 1986 was the outcome of a long and complicated decision-making process. The computer industry had become a key feature of Hannover Messe and had contributed to its unique status as the world's biggest trade show for capital goods. However, the computer exhibitors were having to contend with an increasing number of non-specialists at their stands.
