NikonNikon S3 preview : Just before the IFA 2005 kicked off, Nikon introduced a new series of digital cameras. Amongst them the Nikon Coolpix S3. This stylishly designed digital camera is carried out in various colours. We have had the white version in the office for a few days. The sample we show extensively in this preview is however a so-called pre-production sample. The Nikon S3 digital camera has a beautiful exterior and the compact size makes the Coolpix S3 camera extremely suitable to be carried around with you wherever you go. The high resolution of 6 Megapixels, an internal optical Nikkor lens with a range of 35-105mm and the beautiful 2.5-inch format monitor, make the Nikon Coolpix S3 a surprisingly versatile digital camera.

Like the S1 and S2, the Nikon S3 manages to pack a powerful 35-105mm 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens (35mm equivalent) whilst retaining a surprisingly slim depth of just 19.7mm. The lens also makes use of Nikon's "right-angled" optics system, which enables the lens to function throughout its focal range without ever protruding from the camera body. Designed to deliver swift and efficient performance, the Nikon Coolpix S3 lets the user take up to 190 shots with a single rechargeable EN-EL8 battery (based on CIPA standard), while delivering a speedy start-up time of just 1 second and continuous shooting at up to 1.6fps. Added together, these factors mean the user is ready to shoot more of the time to capture unexpected moments.

Nikon S3 - SanDisk Secure Digital memory card
Nikon, alike many other brands, has focussed almost totally on the Secure Digital (SD) memory card as storage medium. The SD card is available in various different types at which speed and storage capacity make the difference. For the Nikon S3 camera's preview we've used the SanDisk Ultra II SD Plus memory card. The SanDisk Plus card has a unique feature, it kind of breaks in two, after which a USB interface is freed. Pictures made by the Coolpix S3 can also be stored in the 12MB internal memory. Taking into consideration the resolution of 6MP and the size of the files, a minimum storage capacity of 256MB (80 images in the highest resolution) is required.

Nikon Coolpix S3 software
We have had the Nikon Coolpix S3 in our possession for a short time but this was enough to give us a first impression. The beautiful design of the camera is striking and eye-catching. Nikon has paid more and more attention to the software inside the camera lately. Especially this item is offered to play a bigger role at the present time. Functions like auto red eye correction inside the camera and also Face priority AF function, offer a lot of user-friendliness and they do their job pleasantly. It makes you wonder to what extend editing software can be automated and above all how intelligent can software inside the camera become. In a nutshell: it's a beautiful piece of designer software technique that is placed in an even more beautiful designer piece!
