Samsung brings OneNAND flash memory to mid market : Samsung Electronics, the leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it is expanding the availability of its widely praised Samsung OneNAND memory technology to mid-market consumer electronic, automotive, military, aerospace, networking and industrial applications through a cooperative new arrangement with Samsung Datalight, Inc. Choose between 2 packages. Datalight OneBoot and Samsung Datalight OneBoot+File, any mid-size producer of mobile or portable digital products can seamlessly integrate their mobile operating system into Samsung’s OneNAND with exceptional design flexibility, memory integration software and a Flash memory file system.

Samsung OneNAND - Flash technology
Samsung OneNAND, a high read-speed NOR-interfaced flash memory that makes use of the lower cost and the fast program and erase characteristics of a NAND core, represents the fastest flash technology on the market and one that permits the greatest flexibility in designing mobile devices. OEMs most likely to benefit from Samsung's OneNAND flash and the Datalight integration package are mid-size OEMs now using the more feature-limiting and more costly NOR memory.
Samsung Datalight OneBoot - MP3, PMP & scanner
The Datalight products improve device performance, increase device reliability, add design flexibility and speed time-to-market. Potential applications include MP3 players, network control devices, security systems, scanners, sensors, industrial control equipment, automotive 'info-tainment' sub-systems, global positioning systems, military recorders, PMPs (portable media players) and avionic safety devices.
Samsung OneNAND flash memory - Manufacturer
"In the past, OneNAND flash was used primarily by large manufacturers, whose volume of business allowed for the added cost of creating custom transaction software and flash file integration systems," said Don Barnetson, associate director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. "Our new relationship with Datalight to provide ready-to-go integration software will make OneNAND technology much easier to incorporate into mid-market designs."
Samsung OneBoot software - File system
The new OneBoot software can be used in systems interfacing with Samsung's OneNAND without the need for a file-system. The OneBoot+File product includes a full file system with file, director and volume formats in addition to OneNAND management features. As a transactional file system, it also overcomes a standard FAT file system's instability in the event that power is suddenly lost.
Samsung flash memory - Disk storage
The software resides between an operating system and Samsung's OneNAND flash memory, allowing the device's operating system to recognize OneNAND flash memory as normal disk storage for applications. It also provides a block-device driver interface that can be used with virtually any OS file system, while requiring little or no support.
