ToshibaToshiba direct methanol fuel cell : At the IFA show 2005 in Berlin I found a great alternative for rechargeable batteries for personal devices such as Notebook-PCs, digital audio players, portable DVD players, cellular phones, etc. This high tech innovation has been public for some time now, but still its potential is or could be great. Fuel cell itself generates power enabling users to power a device for as long as the fuel tank is topped up. Toshiba has developed the world's smallest Direct Methanol Fuel Cell using a high concentration of methanol as fuel. It is a completely different way of thinking. A Fuel Cell is like a small generator. It produces energy from fuel, such as hydrogen or alcohol to power a chemical reaction.

This chemical reaction is without combustion or moving parts like a turbine. According to Toshiba this is one of the reasons why Fuel Cells are highly efficient and reliable. Toshiba is using a higher concentration of methanol (99.5%) which enables Toshiba to make a tiny system. This is necessary to integrate it into portable devices such as digital audio players and cellular phones. You need only 2ml of fuel to ensure power for 20 hours operation of an MP3 audio player. Toshiba is actually running field tests with mobile phones at this moment.
