NikonJim Lee's "Eye for Images" exhibition sponsored by Nikon : Nikon UK is delighted to be sponsoring Jim Lee’s photography exhibition Eye for Images. The “Eye for Images” exhibition is a retrospective of Lee’s work as a fashion photographer from 1968 to 1978 in both London and New York. Lee began his photography career in 1963, based in London. Jim ran with a cool inheritance and enjoyed life in the late sixties and early seventies when the budgets, scale and sheer professionalism of British imageland expanded hugely. Jim’s timing couldn’t have been better; he worked as a fashion photographer from 1968 to 1978, and then moved into directing big-budget commercials at the start of the Golden Age of British television.

Initially working for the high profile Harpers and Queen (sister of Harper’s Bazaar US), he met the remarkable Anna Wintour, then in her first fashion editorial job and already showing the style that made her editor of American Vogue years later. Jim Lee worked with her on distinctive shoots including Guinness, Coty and American Express and then later in New York.

Jim Lee - Talent as a photographer
Following his instincts, Jim moved to live and work in New York from 1975 to 1978. This was a disastrous period for the City’s economy but an extraordinary one for its culture - magazines, music and clubland. Jim Lee’s talent as a photographer lies in his ability to build narratives with casts from three to three hundred people. He has the ability to recognise the moment and utilise extraordinary background props that distil the aesthetics of a period. This talent has resulted in images such as the Vietnam GI rescuing the girl in an Ossie Clark print dress of 1969. This image was one of six photographs of Ossie Clark’s work featured in the V & A’s retrospective in 2004. It was this display of work at the V&A, and the interest shown, that prompted Jim to showcase his work in Eye for Images in September 2005.

Fashion photographer
Later Jim carved a career as a distinguished commercials director and feature film director which he enjoyed for twenty five years prior to returning to his roots as a fashion photographer in 2003. Lee now shoots special projects for selected clients.
