SonySony SXR-R110 projector introduction : At Cinema Expo this year, Sony is demonstrating the world’s first commercially available ?4K’-pixel projector. The SXR-R110 projector uniquely bridges the gap between today’s 2K standard and the future Hollywood studio standard of 4K. The Sony SRX-R110 conforms to DCI (Digital Cinema Initiative) System Specification standards for digital cinema picture quality and achieves an extraordinary 4K (4096 x 2160) image resolution, four times the resolution of a 2K projector, in anticipation of future 4K movie releases by the major Hollywood studios. Europe’s first commercial installation of the SRX-R110 4K projector is at the Nova Kino in Trondheim (Norway).

The SRX-R110 also accepts 2K or High Definition sources that are used for today’s digital theatre exhibition, yet will always display them on the screen as a 4K image by using advanced digital technology. The size of the individual pixels is therefore always one quarter of those displayed by the current 2K projectors, which renders them invisible. The SRX-R110 is equally suitable for screening ?all digital’ productions that have been shot and produced entirely in High Definition, or features that have been acquired with 35mm film.

Sony - SXRD technology
The new Sony SXR-R110 projector is based on Sony’s SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display) panel technology that produces a smooth, film-like picture with higher levels of image resolution, contrast, and response speed than any other digital presentation system. “Audiences in Europe will soon be experiencing High Definition television at 2K resolution in the home, therefore it’s clear that the studio industry will be putting increased pressure on theatres to show their productions at 4K resolution”, says Richard Lewis, Product Marketing Manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe.

SRX-R110 - Added value to D-cinema
“The reaction we are already getting from theatrical audiences seeing movies presented in 4K for the first time has been nothing short of astonishing”, continues Lewis. “Once audiences have experienced movies in 4K, it’s hard to persuade them that anything less is good enough. Thanks to concerted industry efforts, like the DCI initiative, of which Sony is an active member, all-digital cinema is fast becoming a commercial reality. The SRX-R110 is a key part in the D-cinema value chain, ensuring that studios, distributors and theatres can all give audiences an experience that matches the director’s original vision.”

About the SRX-R110 4K Projector
The Sony SRX-R110 offers the world’s first ?4K’ pixel resolution per colour, representing over four times that of 2K projectors and High Definition Television (HDTV); this level of resolution meets the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) System Specification standards for digital cinema image quality. A contrast ratio greater than 1800:1 delivers rich and precise colour tonal representation, with a brightness of 10,000 ANSI lumens.
