Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti compact camera
The Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti is the product of ten years of IXUS; which has led to a stylish design in a high-quality titanium housing. There are no doubts about the fact that the Canon IXUS 900 Ti is pure eye-candy; this camera truly is a top product as far as design is concerned. The Canon 900 Ti feels durable to the touch, and features a neatly finished design. In fact, one could even go as far as to say that this small camera is the absolute pinnacle of design. It easily stands out from the competition, whilst the blend of elegance and user-convenience ensures the Canon 900 Ti is without question a high-quality product.
Canon Digital 900 Ti - Menu & My Color mode
The operation of the Canon IXUS 900 Ti will not surprise the experienced Canon user. The camera's menu has remained virtually unchanged, and proves both clear and swift to navigate. The various features are shown on coloured TAB-pages, and the multi-controller allows you to switch rapidly between the various parts. The variety of pre-programmed scenes is both clear and comprehensible; as each scene deals with a specific subject, they aren't likely to be confused. It seems Canon are not easily lured into using staggering amounts of, often nonsensical, scenes. Although the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti is a fully automatic camera, it still offers the creative photographer several options to make a fully personalised composition. The My Color mode, for instance, offers a fun option to experiment with a variety of digital effects in a simple and straight-forward way. In fact, you do not need any know-how on the topic of image editing to get started.
Canon Digital IXUS 900Ti - M mode
In addition to the pre-programmed scenes and the creative image editing mode, the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti does feature a so-called M mode. Although M often guarantees a range of manual settings, Canon have limited things to the manual adjusting of the light metering, ISO value, exposure compensation, etc. It has to be said, however, that I only rarely ran into situations that required a manual intervention. The average image can generally always be shot, though certain technical photo stunts will perhaps require a little extra assistance; such as using spot metering for images that are very rich in contrast, etc. The camera performs superbly indeed, and the images prove to be of excellent quality. However, I did find myself asking all throughout the practice tests just what exactly the surplus value of the Canon 900 Ti is. Yes, shooting with a real 10 Megapixel camera is fun, but what is the actual benefit? In reality, there will be next to none for the average consumer. Then again, it will mean prospective users of a Canon 900 Ti will be at the fore-front of the Megapixel race, at least for the time being…
Canon IXUS 900 Ti - DIGIC III & ISO values
The image quality of the Canon IXUS 900 Ti is excellent. The white balance performs very well, and will only require a little adjustment in the form of a manual setting when working with a surplus of artificial light, so that the colour cast can be kept to a minimum. The fast DIGIC III processor is a powerful part of the camera, and ensures that the increased resolution will not cause any delays, an impressive achievement! The 10 Megapixel images are processed rapidly, provided you are working with a fast SD card. The Canon IXUS 900 Ti offers an extensive range of ISO values, which run from 80 up to and including 3200 ISO. The latter, however, can only be used in a resolution of 2 Megapixels. The images up to and including 400 ISO show a very decent and acceptable amount of noise, and are perfect to print in large format. Although ISO 800 proves to suffer from a certain degree of negative noise effects, it can still easily be used, provided the image is properly exposed. This last reason is of particular significance when using high ISO values. As far as I'm concerned, using higher ISO values in this type of compact camera isn't all that necessary. Although the ISO quality does improve bit by bit, the fact that the emphasis seems to lie more on the amount of Megapixels than the actual pixel quality, means I would -at least for now- not resort to using high ISO values.
Canon IXUS 900Ti compact camera - LCD monitor
Although the optical viewfinder may be a mere detail for many, it is a detail through which Canon manage to stand out from the crowd. In the olden days, when the LCD monitor was a meagre 1.5-inch in size, there wasn't a manufacturer in sight that dared to tamper with the optical viewfinder. However, as the size of the monitor grew and the quality improved, many optical viewfinders found their downfall. Naturally, a large format monitor is a joy to assess your images on, as well as share them with others, or simply capture your shots with, but it is in summery conditions in particular that an optical viewfinder would be preferable to the LCD display. The Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti offers both a 2.5-inch format high resolution monitor and a small optical viewfinder. Furthermore, those who use the optical viewfinder more often may opt to deactivate the monitor, and thereby save a factor of 3 in energy!
Canon Digital IXUS 900Ti - Top model of the IXUS line
After having tested the Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti for a considerable amount of time, our final judgement proves unanimously positive. We have to say this didn't exactly come as a surprise; Canon IXUS cameras generally perform very well indeed, and a top model like the IXUS 900 Ti isn't likely to be an exception. The camera is user-friendly and offers an excellent quality. However, it isn't a camera for the photographer that wants a small compact camera on the side to unleash his creativity through manual exposure. The Canon IXUS 900 Ti is in fact a camera for the user that is looking for design, ease and user-friendliness packaged in the most compact possible housing. The fact that he or she will actually get a titanium housing should without question be regarded as a bonus. The Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti may deservedly be called the top model of the IXUS line!

SanDisk Extreme II SD card
Consequently, it would be only logical to combine the purchase of a Canon Digital IXUS 900 Ti with that of an extra memory card, or even several cards. Secure Digital offer a wide variety of memory cards, especially with the recent addition of the Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) cards. It has to be said, however, that the latter isn't yet an interesting option for this type of compact camera, unless there is a realistic chance you will frequently be storing more than 464 images on a single card. Secure Digital memory cards are available in a standard, fast and fastest version. We chose to compare the standard (512MB SD SanDisk) and the fast SanDisk Extreme III 1GB Secure Digital card. The Canon IXUS 900 Ti features a continuous shooting mode that allows you to capture a series of images with a speed of 2.1fps. However, this does require a fast card. When working with the standard Secure Digital card, you will find the 5th image to be the limit (JPEG 10 Megapixels Super Fine), whilst the speed decreases to approximately 1fps. In combination with an Extreme III SD card, you will be able to shoot continuously until the memory card is full, without experiencing any delays whatsoever. Those who wish to capture images continuously should therefore seriously consider purchasing a fast card!
