I have been using the Ricoh Caplio GX8 for 11 months now and I am impressed with the quality and features this little box has to offer. Apart from being very fast to boot and get a good photo in an instant, the manual options for such a small camera are fantastic. Battery life is excellent. My Ricoh GX8 came with battery and charger. Spare batteries are available for around $20. USB2.0 is nice and fast for transfer to the computer. The Ricoh Caplio GX8 works fine with Windows XP. The camera is very light and fairly discrete. You can purchase additional lenses which attach easily. The DW4 lens is a good option to go for great wide angle. Firmware is easily upgradeable. I would recommend this camera to anyone backpacking that wants more than a point a click.

The Ricoh GX8, a real gem. solid metal body. Buttons with logical functions minimise menu use during shooting. 1cm macro. Wide 28mm lens. Delay from "on" to shooting is very short. Shutter lag very short, making fast reactions (eg. photos of children) Much more predictable. Battery life is excellent, even with AA NiMH, never mind Li. Ability to attach an external flash is fantastic in a camera of this price. With the small auto flash I use, I flick the Caplio GX8 into manual (1/80sec f2.5 - it remembers the setting next time) then fire away. Having external flash with it's own power really reduces the waiting time normally found when cameras charge their own flash from their own battery and no redeye, without silly x2 flashes. Handles more like a 35mm- Superb!

The first day I used my Ricoh Caplio GX8 I noticed a screaming bright green pixel in the photos. Upon closer examination, the CCD was full of bad pixels. The place where I bought it swapped it and the replacement also has about a dozen bad pixels but at least they are not bright green. The quality of the CCDs in these cameras must be crap. It looks like Ricoh are using the CCDs that others reject due to quality. Regardless of the good features the fact that they use rubbish CCDs is too bad to ignore. My advice would be to find a camera that uses good quality parts.

Useable ISO 1600 when converted to bw, keep colour depth to neutral for best contrast. Text mode is fun, but needs manipulation, I use Neat Image in freebie spec. Other scene modes fine for point and shoot. Faced with high contrast, use min aperture setting for least pixel fringing. Outrageous macros. Still haven't worked out what the snap and infinity focus modes of the Caplio GX8 really do. Same for fotometry settings. Other manual settings give plenty of scope for night shots, overexposure and so on, autobracket function actually works and also useful for pictures of kids and other things that tend to move about. Autobracket wb excellent for landscapes. Manual wb odd but fun. Battery life fine. Knockers didn't test it properly and it fits in your pocket!

The good points of the Ricoh Caplio GX8 camera are: Hard body and material, good hand feel, nice macro and LCD monitor, quite professional and more accessories available, 28 wide and has manual mode. The bad things of the Ricoh GX8 are : Just 3 apertures, no fast focus in the dark, not enough zoom, too small LCD - 1.8cm big. All in all, I rate the Ricoh Caplio GX8 on 70%.
