Pentax *ist DL2 Reviews from camera owners

The Pentax *ist DL2 is my first digital SLR camera after a brief spell with a bridge camera (Fuji S9500) - What a difference in performance! My kit was purchased recently from Jessops at the bargain price of only £350 and the quality at this price is amazing. I also bought the 55-200 zoom lens and the whole kit (plus spare batteries, cards, cables etc), which fits into a Lowepro Nova 1 bag, so it is extremely compact. Compared to the bridge camera, the body is almost the same size and is very portable. The camera sits well in your hand and is simple to use with all its functions at hand or accessible easily through the menu. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this model as it is such a bargain.

The Pentax *ist DL2 is a great DSLR in the Pentax tradition of small and fantastic optics. The 18-55mm DA lens supplied is a great all round lens. But being able to use all those older SMC style lenses is just wonderful. Australian buyers beware that the local distributer for some reason supplies this camera without the Pentax lens and some other brand substituted. In my experience this is a big NO-NO. Stick with the Pentax lenses. My only complaints are as follows. The USB connection plug to the camera are miniscule. There was plenty of room for a decent plug at the camera end, so why stuff around with this connection when a larger plug could have been used. The flash off on the selector should be next to AUTO not at the other end of the dial.

This is my first Digital SLR after upgrading from a prosumer camera (Fuji S5600 zoom). I have found the Pentax *ist DL2 a very easy to use camera, which I use mainly for wildlife shots, and am very pleased with the image quality. The Pentax *ist DL2 can be used in low light situations with the ISO 800 setting giving very usable photos, any higher than this and some noise does creep in to the images. The menus are easy to access and the digital preview feature is very useful. I would have no second thoughts about recommending this camera to anyone wishing to try their hand with a digital SLR, you get very reasonable photos for a low budget cost.
