Samsung Digimax A503 | Digital Camera Review | Storage and Energy
The Samsung Digimax A503 camera comes with an internal storage capacity of 24MB. This is enough to store some pictures and a bit of video material. Naturally, the number of pictures and minutes of video will be considerably increased if you use a storage card. To give ourselves enough room, we fitted the Samsung Digimax with a 512MB Secure Digital memory card from SanDisk. We were then able too save a huge number of pictures. The numbers are never really exact as some pictures have more information and are larger in format. Of course, resolution settings also influence the number of pictures that can be saved.

Secure Digital flash memory card
If you buy a digital camera like the Samsung A503 you will have to weigh up whether it is worthwhile buying a storage medium that is almost as expensive as the camera itself. Taking all of this camera's possibilities into consideration, it is definitely worth your while to buy a Secure Digital memory card with large storage. It is also sensible to make use of the possibilities offered by digital storage: numbers x quality. Obviously, more storage will allow you to always work in the highest and best resolution/compression. Samsung has its own indication for resolutions used: they are expressed as M in Megapixel whereby 5 is the highest quality. The resolution settings are also clearly shown on the LCD screen. Six different choices are given, the lowest of which (VGA - 640 x 480 pixels) only just bears the critical scrutiny! Two resolutions can be set in Video mode.

Considering 512MB of storage:
Resolution 5M - 2560 x 1920 pixels - Fine 176 pictures
Resolution 4M - 2272 x 1704 pixels - Fine - 235 pictures
Resolution 3M - 2048 x 1536 pixels - Normal 294 pictures
Resolution 2M - 1600 x 1200 pixels - Normal - 471 pictures
Resolution 1M - 1024 x 768 pixels - Low - 1082 pictures
Resolution VGA - 640 x 480 pixels - Low - 2403 pictures

Video resolution - 640 x 480 pixels - 7 min 57 sec
Video resolution - 320 x 240 pixels - 27 min 28 sec
Samsung Digimax A503 - Battery compartment
Just like the various symbols on and around the buttons, the indicator telling you how to place the battery correctly is also very small. Although the storage card is well hidden behind the lid to the battery compartment, it is placed exactly opposite to how you would expect. Watch out then when placing the battery and Secure Digital memory card. Samsung gives clear advice as to which energy source to use: high quality batteries are important, but NiMH batteries are also fine to use so long as they have a high capacity.

Samsung Digimax A503 - NiMH batteries
There is not much you can say beforehand about the final performance of the energy source, but because Samsung has chosen for a format and quality that are in principle, available everywhere, an extra set of batteries can do no harm. In order to save energy, the Samsung Digimax A503 turns itself off after 1, 3 or 5 minutes. This can be set in the menu beforehand. The LCD will turn itself off if there is not enough battery power, but will first show a warning on its screen. The personal settings remain unchanged after the batteries have been changed and this comes in very handy.
