Canon Digital IXUS 65 | Digital Camera Review | Control
You will, of course, cut a dash with a designer camera like this. Which is why it would be pretty embarrassing if you had to fumble around every time you took a picture. Fortunately, this is unlikely to happen with the Canon Digital IXUS 65. The Canon IXUS 65 is very easy to operate. Thanks to the Touch Control Dial, it looks a lot like the popular Apple iPod, which, of course, you also have in your pocket.
Canon Digital IXUS 65 - Shooting
It is easy to find the main switch on the top. Just press it in and the lens comes out in no time at all and the Canon IXUS 65 is ready to shoot. The entire operation hardly takes a second and can definitely be described as quick. Make sure that the switch beside it is on the right setting. If you carry the camera in your pocket or bag, the switch can easily change settings. When you first use the camera everything is set on automatic. This is ideal for a simple snapshot, but this camera can do much more.
Canon IXUS 65 camera - LCD screen
The first thing you notice is the large and clear display adorning the Canon Digital IXUS 65. Because you are totally dependant on the screen with this sort of camera, it is especially important that it is first rate. The image on the screen can still be seen clearly in bright light, which is quite an achievement. You can also get a good impression of the photo from various angles. There is no optical viewfinder but you won’t miss it. What’s more, even if the Canon Digital IXUS 65 did have an optical viewfinder, it appears in that no one would bother using it in practice. We have now become used to holding the camera away from our faces - just take a look next time you are around a group of people taking photos. In this aspect, digital cameras have changed the way we take photographs.
Canon Digital IXUS 65 - Touch Control Dial
The Touch Control Dial has an important function. You use it to set all the important functions. At first, I didn’t see the advantages when I had the camera in my hands during a press conference, but it turned out to be a unique discovery. If you touch the Touch Control Dial, it appears in large on the screen. You can see everything clearly by just sliding your fingers over the Touch Control Dial. It doesn’t matter that the button is rather small. The main advantage is that you can also operate the button in complete darkness.
Canon IXUS 65 camera - Func button
The familiar FUNC button can be found in the middle of the Touch Control Dial. You use it to access the most important settings like the ISO value, My Colors and quality as well as releasing the Canon IXUS 65 from the fully automatic setting.
It may be called M for manual (which is a bit of an exaggeration), but you can still not set the aperture and shutter speed. On the other hand, how many users want to do this anyway? Probably only a few professional photographers that have the Canon Digital IXUS 65 as a spare camera.
Canon IXUS 65 - Viewing pictures
Being able to get enlargements of a crop immediately after you have taken a photograph is very handy as it allows you to check the sharpness very quickly. It always zooms in on the focus point. This is logical as it is the sharpness that you most need to check. It is also simple to leaf through the picture. Of course you can also do this by pressing play, but this is very quick and you can see at a glance if you need to take another picture of if you are done.
IXUS 65 - 9 point AiAF (Artificial intelligence AutoFocus)
The focus is taken care of by a 9 point AiAF, which stands for Artificial intelligence AutoFocus. It is not clear exactly how the camera decides the focus point. Sometimes the camera chooses other points even if you have not changed the camera and subject. The fact is that the Canon IXUS 65 is nearly always right. This camera can find the sharpness accurately and quickly. Even in dark conditions, the Canon Digital IXUS 65 managed fine, occasionally aided by an auto focus illuminator.
Canon Digital IXUS 65 - Languages
The menu looks very familiar, which is logical seeing that it is the same as most of Canon’s other compact cameras. Actually, the entire Canon IXUS 65 can be operated in the same way as any other compact camera from Canon. This is a big advantage, all the more so because they leave little to desire. Canon was one of the first to see the usefulness of having several languages in the menu and there is also a wide selection of languages in the Canon IXUS 65. It may seem like a trivial point, but one should realise that not everyone in the world speaks English. Compliments on this point as well.
