Canon Powershot A700 | Digital Camera Review | Conclusion
Canon PowerShot A700 digital camera
With the introduction of the Canon PowerShot A700, Canon have added the flagship of the PowerShot A series digital cameras to their assortment. The camera has plenty to offer and features a variety of setting options. The Canon A700 holds an attractive market position and will appeal to a broad group of consumers. The user may expect a digital camera that is easy to operate and does not limit those interested in creative photography. The Canon PowerShot A700 is likely to enjoy a significant amount of support from the success of the other cameras from the PowerShot series.

Canon PowerShot A700 - 6 Megapixels
The Canon A700 is a digital camera of superb quality, and its 6 Megapixel resolution more than suffices to make an enlargement or edit the image afterwards. The in-camera software ensures the user is able to edit immediately after having captured the image. Canon certainly deserve extra credit for the easily accessible settings. The menu is well-arranged, and the navigation both swift and direct. The large size LCD monitor offers a good reproduction and replaces the optical viewfinder without difficulty.

Canon A700 camera - LCD screen
However, it is somewhat of a disappointment that Canon have not carried the flip-out and tilting LCD display through to the Canon PowerShot A700, especially as such a handy screen holds a definite surplus value. Given this absence, I had at least expected them to boost the resolution of the screen, but this does not (yet) seems to be the case. The rendition is of good quality and can also easily be used in daylight. It is in fact only the knowledge of the advantages of a high resolution reproduction that continues to linger in the back of one's mind.

Canon PowerShot A700 - ISO & Internal flash
The high ISO value with which Canon, just as several of their rivals, attempt to compensate jitter, does not really have that much of an impact. Especially seeing as competition has started to use image stabilisers in several similar models. The image stabiliser is an exceptionally handy feature which greatly improves the quality of images taken in difficult light situations, and/or with use of a tele lens. In addition, the long charging time for the internal flash leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste. The Canon A700 is equipped with 2x AA format batteries, which does keep the camera compact, but also proves that the concept of, for instance, the PowerShot A610 or A620 wasn't all that bad (4x AA). The camera was slightly larger, yet free of the long charging time for the internal flash.

Canon A700 - User friendly operation
These remarks do not mean, however, that the Canon PowerShot A700 lacks in quality. On the contrary even, the images are sharp and rich in detail. The user-friendly operation, the large optical range, and of course the colour rendition make the Canon A700 an extremely attractive digital camera. The camera features an extensive array of options that leave the creative photographer plenty of choice. In addition, the camera offers possibilities to expand, in the form of converters that enable you to enhance the zoom range, which is unprecedented for a camera in this class.

Canon PowerShot A700 - Excellent digital camera
May the results of our tests be clear. The remarks made about the slightly more negative sides of the Canon PowerShot A700 are generously outweighed - and even erased - by the camera's strong points and assets. The Canon PowerShot A700 is an excellent digital camera with major potential. A camera that suits a very broad group of consumers, not to mention a perfect first step to a more advanced camera. Its compact size and light weight encourage the user to carry the camera along often. The Canon A700 evolved from a strong concept, and will without question continue the success of the Canon PowerShot A series digital cameras.
