Olympus E500 | Digital Camera Review | Storage and Energy
Olympus is one of the founders of the xD Picture Card, therefore it should come as no surprise that these cards can be used in the Olympus E-500. Fortunately however, it also supports the regular CompactFlash cards, as these are more widely available in a large range of capacities and speeds. A Lithium Ion battery is used for the power. This is a well-known type that we have come across many times before.

SanDisk Extreme III CF memory card
It is fair to say that by now we have all grown accustomed to 8 Megapixels in D-SLR cameras. They offer sufficiently large files for a beautiful enlargement. It does however require a considerable amount of space, especially when photographing in RAW. A RAW file is approximately 13.6MB in size. A TIFF no less than 24.5MB; it is thus a great thing that an 8 bits TIFF is. Where JPEG is concerned, the file size mainly depends on the compression used. The E-500 comes with four compression settings. At the maximum resolution a JPEG with a 1/2.7 x compression is approximately 5.4MB in size. In the lowest compression (1/12) this has gone down to 1.8MB. With such files it is more than recommendable to have sufficient capacity; in my opinion a 1GB memory card would thus be the absolute minimum. Better yet would be a 2GB memory card, in addition it would also be wise to pay a little extra attention to the speed of the card. CompactFlash cards from, for example, SanDisk; the SanDisk Extreme III CF, offers highly continuous and quick data processing, which is a feature that offers a distinct increase in speed for a camera such as the Olympus E500. The following table shows how many images fit on a 1GB memory card at various resolutions.

Considering 1GB of storage capacity:
RAW - 3264 x 2448 - 13.6MB - 74 images
TIFF - 3264 x 2448 - 24.5MB - 40 images

Olympus E-500 - xD Picture geheugenkaart
Besides the swift CompactFlash memory cards, a faster kind of xD Picture cards has recently become available. Olympus is able to put the speed of both card types to excellent use. You can already easily notice the difference between the, not even that slow, Ultra II and the Extreme III. A definite advantage is that the buffer is quickly emptied, meaning that you will be able to continue taking your photos in a jiffy. In addition, you're able to review your images faster on the monitor. In fact, the entire camera seems to get into better gear because of it. If you intend to work at high speed, I would advise against a standard xD card. The CompactFlash cards are a lot quicker when working with the E-500. At this time we have not yet been able to gain test experience from a faster xD Picture card opposed to the Extreme III memory card.

E-500 digitale SLR - Olympus BLM-1 Lithium Ion accu
The battery is of a well-known type. The shape is common to the one we often encounter in other D-SLR cameras, it is only the contact points that differ, which unfortunately limits the exchangeability. This will however be possible within the same brand and Olympus is no different. The Olympus BLM-1 Lithium Ion battery is also used in the Olympus E-1, the E-300 and the C-8080 Zoom. If one prefers, a special holder for three CR123A batteries can also be used. This comes in handy if you find yourself in an unexpected situation without power. A full battery load usually guarantees approximately 200-300 images in practice. During this I had the monitor of the E-500 dSLR switched on almost continually and would regularly look back on my images on the monitor. If you are cautious and use the monitor a little less, more images can be taken. All in all an excellent achievement!
