Olympus E500 | Digital Camera Review | Introduction
Olympus E-500 digital SLR review : At this moment Olympus is the sole manufacturer to utilize the FourThirds system. A welcome addition will be Panasonic's model, which is said to follow this year. At the PMA 2006, both Panasonic and Olympic will reveal a great share of details and developments. Consequently, the system's range will be considerably broadened. Its pioneer Olympus is doing quite an impressive job establishing the FourThirds system, to which its third model once again greatly contributes. It is not the successor of the E-1, but a digital SLR for the consumer. They bring us the Olympus E-500, a very compact camera that, contrary to the E-300, comes with a regular prism viewfinder.

Olympus E-500 - Compact
The remarkably wide array of possibilities and options that the Olympus E-500 offers to the user, make it a camera well worth buying. The basic features however might not strike you as particularly impressive upon first glance; we have after all by now gotten quite used to 8 Megapixels. The sensor is the same as the one we find in the E-300, the signal however is processed differently. The monitor with a 2.5 inch format is another feature that has become somewhat average, it is only on the Canon EOS 350D that a smaller 1.8 inch screen is found. The secret to the Olympus E500 digital reflex lies on the inside and in the camera's design itself. The E-500 DSLR is significantly compact yet lies perfectly in the photographer's hand. It reminds somewhat of the Olympus OM-series; the compact reflex camera that won Olympus worldwide fame and recognition.

Olympus E500 - SuperSonic Wave Filter
An absolute unique feature is the system that Olympus has to keep the sensor free of dust. This has been developed even further for the Olympus E-500. The idea behind it is relatively simple. The filter before the sensor vibrates at a high speed, from which it gets its name SuperSonic Wave Filter (SSWF), which ensures dust particles fall down, where they attach to a sticky tape-like construction. In practice this works flawlessly, it is guaranteed to eliminate a considerable amount of dust from your image. Handy, especially as dust often forms the main hindrance for both amateur and professional users of digital reflex cameras.

Olympus E-500 FourThirds system
One of the advantages of the FourThirds system is that a compact size can be created and that the lenses can be easily exchanged. All lenses have a focal length multiplier of two. The 14-45 mm Zuiko Digital lens that comes supplied in the kit thus handles itself as a 28-90mm on a 35mm camera; which is a beautiful and universal range. The lens itself is also very compact. In combination with the small body, it makes the Olympus E-500 an ideal digital camera to take with you on any trip. Furthermore, it is an extremely light-weight camera.

Olympus E-500 D-SLR camera review
Judging from both the size and price of the camera, the Olympus E-500 is meant for those who are new to the world of photography or are making the change from a compact camera to a D-SLR. The sheer amount of possibilities and settings offered on the Olympus E500 however, clearly imply a camera for the more advanced photographer. This makes the Olympus E-500 a camera one can grow in to. It offers a great first step in to the FourThirds system, which will become even more comprehensive over time. We've had the opportunity to test the Olympus E-500 and the standard 14-45 mm extensively. Our results can be read in the following Olympus E-500 digital SLR camera review.
