Konica-Minolta DiMAGE Z6 | Digital Camera Review | Adjustments
The amount of buttons represented on the DiMAGE Z6 camera is limited. The majority of the functions is hidden in the menu of the camera or is placed under the huge command dial on top of the camera's handgrip. The menu of the Konica Minolta Z6 can be found on the back of the camera next to the LCD monitor with right above it the four-way controller that lets you navigate through the menu.

Konica Minolta Z6 camera - Menu
Learning how to work with the menu is a piece of cake. Those who have worked with a Konica Minolta camera before will soon feel at ease with it. The menu contains a couple of tabs with one page linked to them in order to keep things well arranged and it prevents you from getting astray. In my opinion the sequence of certain settings needs a change. For instance the setting for ISO can be found in the third tab page where as this setting is frequently changed in practice. Moreover the setting for the Anti-Shake is placed on the first tab page, but this is a setting that will hardly ever get changed. Of course there is the possibility of dedicating a certain setting to another button, still the button used for this is the flash button, and that is the one you don't want to give up. You'd expect Konica Minolta to create room for a separate quick button wouldn't you?

Besides automatic modes, the owner of a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z6 will not suffer from a lack of setting possibilities. The pre-programmed scene modes lighten your work, but still it's fun to manually decide the exposure. There are a few ways of exposing an image, Multi-segment (256 segments) for the most common cases, Center-weighted and Spot metering, which is highly appreciated. There are not that many digital cameras in this class supporting spot metering and the fact that the Konica Minolta Z6 does, makes it special. The captured images are all stored in sRGB colour space, which is perfect for the target group the camera is aiming at. There is a so-called colour mode function available in the menu that can also be linked to the quick button, which lets you take pictures in black & white and sepia (brown tone). Sharpness and contrast of the image can also be dedicated in the camera. Personally I prefer to stipulate this afterwards on a large screen with a more precise rendition. However in most cases the default settings deliver an excellent image.

Navigating through the four-way controller is very convenient. A little less convenient is the fact that some icons are lacking, like the exposure compensation function. It's hidden in the four-way button, you just have to know it, but it would be easier if there was an icon showing it. Entirely on top of the camera a twosome icons is positioned, one for the internal flash settings and the other for the macro function, easy right? The rest can all be found inside the menu of the DiMAGE Z6 digital camera. By the way, not everything has to be set through the menu, some shortcuts are also available. Like pressing the center of the four-way button in AUTO mode will immediately decide the way of focussing.

Konica Minolta Z6 - Quality images with natural colour rendition
The images I made during testing the Z6 show a natural colour rendition with a normal sharpening. Some manufactures tend to go over the top with the standard sharpening, but this is certainly and fortunately not the case on the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z6. The automatic white balance tries its utmost to calculate an exposure that is as perfectly balanced as possible. Artificial light images however seem to get a less precise auto white balance, but adjusting white balance settings to artificial light overcomes this problem quickly. The noise ratio on the images is perfect at a lower ISO, at ISO 200 noise appears more clearly than desired and images at ISO 320 and higher are not suitable for a noise-free print. Nowadays digital noise still remains to be a problem for most manufacturers. Currently we only know of one positive exception in this field and that is the digital camera's that use Fujifilm's 5th generation super CCD HR image sensors (presently only Fujifilm cameras). We are curious to find out when other image sensors will get an innovative push upwards concerning noise values at higher ISO settings.
