Ricoh Caplio R2 Camera review | Control
The Ricoh Caplio R2 has a very speedy startup time. The clearly visible handgrip not only gives you a good hold on the camera, it is also used for activating the camera. Sliding the handgrip wakes up the Ricoh R2 and within no-time, a mere 0.8 second, the camera is ready to make its first picture, impressive! Even more impressive if we take into account that the Ricoh Caplio R2 is equipped with a 4.8x zoom that is also involved in getting the camera ready to shoot. The large monitor lights up after activating the camera and the camera is almost immediately ready for shooting. When the small switch on the back is switched to 'record mode' it is only a matter of composing a nice scene and pressing the release button and before you know it, your first picture is taken.

Ricoh Caplio R2 - Auto focus
One who sees this Ricoh camera or other Ricoh Caplio digital cameras from the last generation, is usually stunned by the speed and efficiency of the auto focus. This is also the case on the Ricoh R2 that focuses at an ultra high speed and together with the speedy shutter release we can say it is a super fast combination of which competing camera manufacturers may learn from.

Ricoh R2 digital camera - LCD Monitor
The large LCD monitor certainly is a relief compared to the small sizes monitors that we usually find on digital cameras for the last few years. 2.5 inch is a clear format, and an excellent replacement for the optical viewfinder. This latter one is lacking on the Ricoh Caplio R2. Besides that, the monitor is really very suitable for reviewing images. If we activate the menu, we are pleasantly surprised by the bright and fresh looking menu. The use of bright colours and the font size are very enjoyable and it all looks very well-organized. The icons are very obvious and it is even possible to enlarge their size through the menu.

Ricoh Caplio R2 camera - Navigation
Navigating through the menu of the Ricoh R2 is easy. The sections are divided in chapters and you can hop from one chapter to the other using the multi control button. Speed is already a characteristic feature of the Ricoh Caplio R2. Activating the camera happens ultra fast, setting the menu is speedy and easily, and the application of quick buttons like the ADJ and the Quick review add to the user's convenience. Operation of the R2 is straight forward.
Ricoh R2 camera - Focussing
The Ricoh Caplio R2 is equipped with a 4.8x optical zoom lens (28 – 135mm equivalent of a 35mm camera). Zooming is rather precise in 40 steps. This precision is a joyful experience. Generally spoken the Ricoh Caplio R2 focuses fast and again very precise. Unfortunately the Ricoh camera isn't equipped with an AF assist illuminator. The Ricoh Caplio R2 however does contain the so-called automatic focus precision. This automatic function makes sure the camera gives a pre-flash before actually taking the picture, under bad light conditions. This first flash is not taken along in the final image if you are shooting without flash. The automatic focus unfortunately doesn't succeed in obtaining a correct focus when taking images for example indoors in dark corners, when there is insufficient light. I am not convinced by the operation of the auto focus precision, in comparison with an AF assist illuminator I see less correctly focused results.

Ricoh Caplio R2 digital camera - ADJ button
The ADJ button that I mentioned before is a so-called quick button, hiding a number of useful functions. Under this button you will find functions like exposure compensation, white balance settings and ISO settings. A resolution setting is not standard stored in the ADJ button. But it is possible adding a fourth function according to your own wishes to the settings under the ADJ button. This quick way of choosing prevents loosing time, which in the end adds to the user convenience. The operation of the Ricoh Caplio R2 is simple and also easily accessible for novices. You hardly ever need to check the manual to take your first picture, and those photographers with some more experience on the field of digital cameras will find their way with the R2 effortlessly. The compact size lets you take the camera with you wherever you go. The camera is not exactly as light as a feather, but it is definitely very stable. The combination of the high 5 Megapixel resolution, the stylish design, the 4.8x optical zoom lens, and last but not least the speed of the Ricoh Caplio R 2 make this camera a strong and powerful tool.
