Casio QV-R40 Camera review | Adjustments
To begin with: I like a digital camera to be set to my personal preferences, so first I activate the menu and go to the tab page Set-up. I activate the energy saving modes: Sleep and Auto Power off, and put them in the position I want. The Sleep function has a 30 seconds time which is extremely short, but also 2 minutes which is a more realistic time for me. By pushing any button the camera ?wakes up’ very fast. After that I set the time/date and I choose a language,10 available but no Dutch, so I go for English. Activating the camera makes it ready to take pictures. The optical viewfinder shows a very small part of the lens on the right side at the bottom when the ultimate zoom is used, not really disturbing, only a small imperfection. I prefer an LCD monitor and put up with the large amount of energy consumption! The advantage of an optical viewer is the low energy consumption. The disadvantage is that the image proportion between the object that is being captured and the image that is visible through the viewer can differ. Definitely when the object is closer than 1 meter to the camera this parallax will appear. Using the LCD monitor you can prevent this from happening. It happens to every compact camera with an optical viewfinder. Very useful on the QV-R40 is the fact that the LCD monitor is activated automatically when Macro of manually focusing is activated.

Casio QVR40 digital camera - Built-in flash
The built-in flash has a few settings: automatically, flash off, permanent flash, and the red-eye reduction setting. When using the flash at night or in a badly illuminated room, photographing people, the annoying red-eyes can appear in the picture. It is caused by the light of the flash reflected by the retina of the eyes. When the red-eye reduction mode is selected as flash function, the camera will flash three times; once to make the retina in the eyes of the people shut and the second time for the acting of the auto focus. After that the main flash will follow to exposure the image. Useful of a digital image is the fact that red eyes can always be removed afterwards. Beside the mentioned settings it is also possible to adjust the brightness of the flash which is handy when shooting objects that reflect highly or when taking Macro images. The images made with flash look terrific. The images taken inside are well exposed, only bear in mind that the flash range is limited in tele mode. This is the case with all compact digital cameras that have a tele range with a brightness of f4.5 and higher.

Casio QV-R40 camera - Auto focus range
The focal range of Auto focus range has two settings: Spot Auto focus and Multi Auto focus. The first one has a very limited range in the center of the screen which is handy for (small) objects in busy surroundings. The second setting uses a frame with 5 focus points. By pushing the release button half-way down the camera automatically chooses the point where the object is the closest to the camera. This way of focusing is quite accurate.

The white balance is one of the functions that the average digital camera user doesn't use a lot in my opinion. I might be wrong but I guess that many of you use the automatic white balance 8 out of 10 times and then again: why not? However, certain circumstances might be requesting manual setting of the white balance in stead of the automatic setting. The range of the white balance is limited; a setting like Shadow, Incandescent, or Sunny will be a better setting which leads to a better result because a special colour temperature is being selected. One who wants to find the perfect white balance has to carry around a piece of white paper, and using its colour to set the white balance manually, but in real life I think very few will do it this way! The automatic white balance works fine, but at more extreme light conditions this setting might be wrong now and again. So the other settings offer the solution.

Casio digital camera - Recording video clips
Beside capturing images in a high resolution of 4 Megapixels the Casio QV-R40 is also capable of recording video clips with a maximum time span of 30 seconds. It is a pity one cannot record a clip for a longer time span. At this moment manufacturers already offer the recording of a clip where time depends on the storage capacity of the used memory card.
The video clip is recorded without sound but I think that recording with sound should not be a problem nowadays. The clip can be recorded on the internal memory or on an external Secure Digital or MultiMedia memory card. I'd rather see functions like histogram being removed from a compact camera like the QV-R40. These kinds of functions don't belong in a camera in which simplicity comes first. A histogram is some sort of a diagram that shows the brightness of the images. By interpreting that diagram one can judge the over- and under exposure of an image and eventually use exposure compensation. These are a lot of actions and in my opinion the QV-R40 is designed to make high quality images with the least effort possible, in a simple way. The QV-R40 does succeed in this but please leave all those superfluous functions behind, instead chose the option of making video clips with sound!

Let's have a look at the Best Shot function. It's a function that is being promoted a lot by Casio. It will be well placed in the main part of the Casio cameras and it will be welcomed by the starting photographer as well as the advanced amateur. The 21 pre-set scenes can even be extended with ones own image. This image is stored as a scene, so the camera settings will be saved. These settings can be recalled anytime. In spite of the Best Shot function it is possible that an image doesn't turn out perfectly, the cause could be for example the light conditions while taking the picture. Other functions are: adjustable ISO from 80, 160 and 320 ISO, 3 settings for metering (spot, multi and centre-weighted), filter function to change the colour tone of an image (black/white, sepia, red, green, blue, yellow, pink and purple), adjustable contrast, contour brightness and colour saturation and a grid pattern on the monitor. Beside all this there are also various reproduction settings like: the division of the monitor in 9 fields, so an index of the images is shown. And also a calendar function that is worthwhile mentioning. Activating the camera shows a calendar on the monitor. By selecting a certain date that mentions an image, the first image taken on that specific date will be shown. A very useful function that makes it easy to find certain pictures after a holiday for example.

Casio QV-R40 - Print Image Matching II support (PIM II)
Further more the camera supports PIM II. When connecting the camera onto a printer supporting Print Image Matching II it will read the PIM II data and the image will be corrected automatically. One can also connect the camera directly onto a printer that supports the USB Direct Print protocol. This enables printing images without interference of a computer and whichever images in whichever amount can be selected through the camera. However the camera has to be connected to the optional A/C power to function. In spite of the handy small size of the camera, it has a lot in it! Many useful functions that contribute to a larger user's friendliness.
