Nikon Coolpix 8800 | Digital Camera Review | Conclusion
Last year Nikon introduced the first digital camera equipped with an 8 Megapixel CCD. Its successor, the Coolpix 8800 also contains this high resolution and to start this written conclusion right here we can say it's definitely a worthy one. The focal range is enhanced from 8x to a 10x optical zoom lens, and beside that the very welcoming Vibration Reduction function is added. The power of this function is clearly present and anyone who ever worked with a camera equipped with such an anti-shake system wouldn't want to do without it anymore. It's a very convincing feature, and immediately visible in front of the eye during photographing. This function of the camera is a key feature and Nikon has distinguished itself from the majority of digital cameras by adding it to the Coolpix 8800.

In general the image quality is perfect, visible is the rich detail rendition due to the high resolution. The quality of the 10x optical zoom lens is undisputable and is in spite of its minor beauty spots like chromatic aberration at wide angle, a valuable tool on this camera. Working with an electronic viewfinder can differ from camera to camera and ones experiences with it can differ completely. Sometimes it is utterly annoying, in fact diminishing the ease of use, and sometimes it's incredibly satisfying, like we experienced when working with the Coolpix 8800.

It should be possible to improve the camera on some minor items. The write speed from the camera to a computer can be improved. The buffer of the camera allows shooting a rather fast series of images of more than 2 images per second, but then one has to wait until the camera finishes emptying the buffer. The often mentioned interval of release has disappeared from this Coolpix 8800. The camera reacts very fast and is well equipped to be used for the shooting of fast images.

That brings us to the final conclusion that the owner of a Nikon Coolpix 8800 digital camera can call himself lucky to be in possession of a high quality versatile digital camera. A camera that makes it possible to shoot images just like you had them in mind. The user's skills will finally determine the level of the Coolpix 8800. The starter and advanced user have a perfect tool at their disposal at which features like the VR (Vibration Reduction), the high quality zoom lens and the vary-angle monitor are at the base of it. There are no marginal notes to mention of a camera with so many possibilities. The Coolpix 8800 is a true power monster and in that respect also a competitor for cameras like the Nikon D70, Nikon's entry-level digital reflex camera. In short, a high resolution digital camera which is worth every penny, a real winner!
