|Canon PowerShot SX130 IS digital camera review : The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS camera follows up the SX120 IS megazoom camera. It is a logical successor and lays in the trend of the Canon PowerShot megazoom cameras. The new Canon SX130IS is not very surprising; it is introduced with improved functions. The effective image resolution has increased to 12 Megapixels and the zoom range has also increased with 12x and wider angle (28mm instead of 36mm in the SX120 IS). The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS’ body has had a bit of restyling, but still really resembles its predecessor.
12 megapixel Canon PowerShot SX130 IS camera
The 12 Megapixels resolution is a logical increase for Canon’s marketing department, but it is not really on our wish list. A small advantage is that the pixels have now been placed on a bit larger format sensor which most likely improves the signal/noise ratio. The 12x zoom range is always welcome, especially now that the Canon SX130 IS camera’ zoom lens now starts with a 28mm wide angle. Such a range is always good for shooting landscapes or indoor shots. The lens is supported by Canon’s Image Stabilizer, an optical stabilization system that effectively minimizes movement blur.
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS megazoom camera
The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS camera has a large format 3-inch screen with a resolution of 230.000 pixels. Unfortunately, Canon has chosen a relatively standard resolution, but it suffices. An optical viewfinder is not present in the SX130, but this is normal for such a megazoom camera. The well-known multi-control button has been placed to the right of the screen, and in combination with the FUNC button, it gives direct access to the most important programs and settings. On top of the camera we see the well-known command dial with all the main programs.
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS offers 12x zoom lens
The front of the Canon SX130 IS camera is mostly dominated by the 12x zoom lens. There are two small holes to the left and the right for the stereo sound that is recorded while shooting HD video. The camera has a small hand grip that ensures the necessary stability. On the bottom of the grip, two batteries supply the necessary energy. The SD, SDHC or SDXC flash memory card is inserted in the same compartment.
Canon PowerShot SX130 IS review including a DIWA Labs test
The Canon PowerShot SX130 IS megazoom camera is not a camera that you would take with you in your back pocket, in terms of its dimensions, and as it weighs more than 300 grams, it is not exactly lightweight. This Canon PowerShot camera is not only completely automatic, but it can also be controlled manually. Just put a fitting bag around it, and this camera is good for all-round photography. We tested out the Canon PowerShot SX130 IS for a short time in practice, and extensive technical tests were performed in the DIWA Lab. Read our findings in the next Canon PowerShot SX130 IS review.
