|Canon IXUS 300 HS digital camera review : The Canon IXUS camera series is made up of quite a few generations. Canon frequently introduces its design cameras that are especially aimed at the trendy amateur photographer. Now and then a camera turns out to not only be designed stylishly, but also to be progressive in the technical sense. The past generations were each equipped with diverse innovative functions, but it did not make the difference with the competition any clearer. The Canon IXUS 300 HS is a 10 Megapixel camera with 3.8x optical zoom. So far, nothing much is revealed.
10 megapixel Canon IXUS 300HS camera
When we look at the technical specifications, we notice that the Canon 300HS camera is equipped with a 1/2.3-inch format CMOS sensor. It is a so-called backside-illuminated image sensor that is to ensure a higher image quality at high ISO values and a large dynamic range. The 10 Megapixels are (luckily) conservative and seem to be particularly aimed at a higher pixel quality. The f/2.0 aperture in wide angle is also a welcome feature that makes it possible, together with the optical image stabilizer, to photograph with low light.
Canon IXUS 300 HS body
The Canon IXUS 300HS’s body is made of high-quality stainless steel, and is available in matte black and brushed steel (silver). The material feels a bit rough, which is beneficial for handling. There is, however, no hand grip. Despite the compact dimensions, the Canon IXUS 300 HS is equipped with a 3-inch LCD display and offers a low resolution of 230.000 dots. The display has a large viewing angle, which is not only pleasant in the making of a composition, but it is also ideal for the image display. There is no optical viewfinder.
Canon IXUS 300 HS operation
Whoever does not like buttons will be happy with the Canon 300HS. The top has the shutter release button, the on/off button, and a switch for Video/Program and Auto. The back has a multifunctional button with a button above and below it for the display and the menu, respectively. Photos and video clips are saved on an SD, SDHC or SDXC memory card. Canon is, together with Panasonic, one of the first manufacturers that support the new generation SDXC cards. The memory card, just as the Li-Ion battery, is placed underneath the camera.

"The Canon IXUS 300HS is a typical IXUS camera, a camera with a stylish design. The bright f/2.0 lens of the 3.8x optical zoom allows exceptional versatility, capturing low-light images and fast-moving subjects at higher shutter speeds. Its 28mm wide angle coverage lets you put more in the frame, while Canon’s advanced optical IS reduces blur caused by camera shake. The following Canon IXUS 300 HS test photos are taken in Purmerend and on the beach of IJmuiden, the Netherlands. "
