|Sony CyberShot DSC-HX5 digital camera review : Although its appearance doesn’t betray it, the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5 is unique in its kind. In the first place, the Sony HX5 distinguishes itself with its image sensor. While 99% of compact cameras are equipped with a standard CCD sensor, the Sony DSC-HX5 is equipped with a so-called back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Additionally, this compact camera has a 10x optical zoom lens with a 25m wide angle, optical SteadyShot, AVCHD Full HD video (1920x1080 pixels) and the impressively performing Sweep Panorama function with which beautiful panorama photos can be made. The Sony Cybershot HX5 is in that sense not just a standard camera.
Sony DSC-HX5 with built-in GPS navigation
This is also due to the fact that this camera is equipped with a built-in compass and GPS navigation. Geotagging images so that it’s also possible, in combination with for example Google Earth, to visually locate the images at their exact location in the world. The photo- and video-recordings are shown on a large format 3-inch TFT Clear Photo LCD screen in a resolution of 230.400 dots. The creative photographer can live it up in the manual mode, although shutter release time and aperture choices are not offered. He will also value the heightened dynamic range, a technique that comes directly from the Alpha DSLR camera. The data is saved on a Memory Stick DUO or SD/SDHC memory card with additional extra memory in the form of 45MB of internal storage.
Sony CyberShot HX5 camera design
The Sony Cybershot HX5 has compact dimensions and a standard thickness. It is a camera that you can take with you in your pocket, but it is not the most lightweight camera. In any case, it is portable, and you don’t have to buy a special bag for it. The finishing is especially fine and gives the camera a solid appearance. The corners are finished nice and round. A small disadvantage I found is that the camera’s handgrip feels a bit slippery. A rubber strip on the front would be a good solution.
Sony HX5 megazoom camera with 10x zoom lens
The 10x optical zoom lens is neatly stored away in the body and will only protrude when the camera is activated. The internal flash is placed a bit close to the handgrip, which means a risk of blocking the flash by accident for photographers with a bit thicker fingers. The Sony HX5 has a clearly placed settings dial with the main programs on it. The back has a few extra buttons, such as a special video recording button, among others, next to the 3-inch display.
Sony CyberShot DSC-HX5 review
The bottom of the camera has a little lid that covers the compartment for the Li-Ion battery and the memory card. Additionally, the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX5 has a special interface in which a special cable with USB and video or a HDMI-adapter can be inserted. The Sony DSC-HX5 is a camera with a lot of functionality. The camera has been extensively tested on technical aspects in the special DIWA lab, and combined with our practical test, we arrive at a balanced conclusion. The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX5 is equipped with GPS and compass functionality, a feature that we strangely enough see only rarely in a digital camera.
