Olympus Mju 9010 | Digital Camera Review | Adjustments
The 10x optical zoom lens performs pretty well in practice, when we look at image sharpness. In the images, the center sharpness is good to fair up to the tele-range, although blurred edges especially appear in the tele area. Obviously, this costs the image its general sharpness. The zoom lens also suffers from so-called chromatic aberration, especially in wide-angle and the furthest tele position. It is not clear to us if Olympus corrects the chromatic aberration in the internal image processing, but if that is not the case, then the camera engineers at Olympus may reconsider this. However, the Olympus Mju 9010’s zoom lens is not be affected by distortion, as this is an area which Olympus has managed to correct nicely.

Olympus Mju 9010 for all-round photography
The simplicity and ease with which you can do all-round photography is a bonus point for the Olympus Mju 9010. It is ideal to take such a compact camera with you in your pocket and photograph with it loosely. The automatic position will be sufficient for most subjects, but anyone who wants to get a bit more creative, can choose one of the 14 scenes that the camera offers. By choosing such a scene, the lighting priority will be made for the type of image. You can, in a matter of speaking, tell the camera what you have in front of you when you are making the shot. This is handy and very simple to perform in practice. Also fun are the so-called Magic Filters, a sort of built-in mini-Photoshop in which four built-in filters perform the work within the camera, instead editing afterwards on the computer.

And then there is an observation that may not be noticeable for everyone, but our experience with the Olympus Mju 9010 showed us that menu navigation speed is a bit slow. This is hard to judge, as it mostly depends on personal experience.

Mju 9010 test
Compared with other cameras in this segment, and speaking from experience, the navigation would benefit from a bit more speed. Additionally, it is clear that the camera requires it to be kept as simple as possible. However, if you do want to adjust something that goes a bit deeper than the standard setting, then you will often have to push buttons to get to that function. If you don't think too much about it and just let the camera do the work, you will not share this experience.

Olympus Mju 9010 image quality
A disadvantage that the effect of a 10x zoom lens brings with it is the tendency to photograph from a distance. In the image it becomes immediately apparent if the photographer was not actually part of the situation, and that doesn’t always benefit the shot. Secondly, the effective range of the flash is only a few meters. For indoor shots, for example a party, or other dimly-lit circumstances, it is better not to use the zoom, and just stand closer to the subject yourself. This will improve your shot considerably.
