Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS Camera review | Adjustments
Upon the arrival of a Canon IXUS 200IS test sample, it is tested in our DIWA Lab. The technical data from the rigorous tests are processed and translated into understandable data. Inside the lab, testing takes place in standardized circumstances. An environment in which cameras, both compact and system concepts can be compared without a problem. Besides that, the Canon 200IS compact camera is extensively used in practice and evaluated as for operation and shooting in practice. This combination of lab tests and the testing in practice, results in a final conclusion that is carefully reviewed.

Color reproduction and white balance
In terms of color reproduction, the Canon IXUS 200 IS camera is on track. The blue and red channels are slightly more saturated, but not to the extent where it becomes disturbing. Light skin tones tend to become somewhat rosier, while the darker skin tones appear somewhat warmer. The colors deviate only very slightly compared to the calibrated colors of the Gretag Macbeth Color Checker. In practice, the colors will come across as nice and natural. The auto white balance has some difficulties to effectively neutralize color cast caused by fluorescent light. A manual white balance or the appropriate fluorescent light setting will deliver a better result. Other than that, the auto white balance of the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS camera obtains a decent result.

Canon IXUS 200 IS noise reduction
The large amount of pixels on a small image sensor does not provide a lot of extra to user. Although it enables you to make more image crops, since you have more pixels left; if the quality of the pixels does not increase together with the actual amount, it will soon lead to the wrong side of the scales. The sample pictures we took with the Canon IXUS 200IS show a nice degree of detail at low ISO values, however; at ISO 400 the internal noise reduction has to start working in order to suppress noise. Reviewing high ISO pictures, we soon find loss of detail and loss of sharpness.

ISO settings
Although the specifications of the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS state that high ISO values are possible, in practice they are not all that effective. Or at least, if we consider maintaining high picture quality. On the other hand; it is true that high ISO sensitivity enables you to capture pictures that would usually not belong to the possibilities.

Integrating an optical stabilizer makes it less likely for you to use high ISO sensitivities. Nice weather and good light circumstances are the environmental conditions in which the Canon IXUS 200IS feels most comfortable.

Canon IXUS 200 IS image quality
The beautiful 24 mm wide-angle is a pleasure to work with. There are many objects which really show to the fullest with a wide angle like this. The risk of a not entirely smooth picture quality does however become slightly larger. For example, the center of the wide angle picture is sharper than the edges. There is more divergence in terms of sharpness, although not actually disturbingly visible. The telephoto pictures show a similar effect, although less according to the technical lab measurements.

Test results of the Canon IXUS lens
Something the Canon Digital 200 IS lens does suffer from is chromatic aberration. Both wide angle and extreme telephoto mode suffer from purple fringes around the object in contrast-rich circumstances. It is not really disturbing, although it is still measured in the lab. When it comes to vignetting, we find this phenomenon only slightly at 24 mm wide and blue skies. The colors become somewhat darker towards the corner of the picture, although also here, not to a disturbing extent.

Canon IXUS 200IS test in practise
The overall quality of the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS camera is decent and especially in optimal circumstances, it will be satisfying for everyone. It is a camera to take snapshots and to always carry with you. If you prefer all-round shooting, you will soon encounter the shortcomings of a compact camera. High ISOs in moderate light conditions reduce the image quality, but on the other hand, the IXUS 200 will let you shoot with ease and fun.
