Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ5 | Digital Camera Review | Storage and Energy
Being one of the initiators of the Secure Digital memory card, it will come as no surprise that the Panasonic Lumix TZ5 features a card slot supporting this format. On top of that, the new SD platform, Secure Digital HC or SDHC is also supported so you will not run out of storage capacity. SD offers a maximum storage capacity of 2GB while SDHC nowadays supports a maximum storage capacity of 32GB! The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 has an internal memory that has been increased from 13 to 49,2MB compared to its predecessor; however, in practice it is still not sufficient for one short holiday. One picture taken in the highest resolution and lowest compression still has a size of 5MB.

Panasonic DMC-TZ5 storage capacity
The TZ3 offered a resolution of 7 Megapixels whilst the file size of a 7MP image was approximately 3.5MB. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 now has been equipped with a 9 Megapixel image sensor which leads to an increase of the amount of data that has to be stored. The memory market is constantly increasing the storage capacity and lowering the prices so consumers should encounter no problem in finding a high storage capacity memory card. We advice using a minimum of 2GB of storage capacity or go directly for the new SDHC memory card with a minimum storage capacity of 4GB.

USB 2.0 interface on the Panasonic TZ5
Panasonic have upgraded the USB interface from a slower version (TZ3) to a fast Hi-Speed USB 2.0 for the Panasonic TZ5. It is quite remarkable how Panasonic leads with for example a wide angle zoom lens and optical stabilizer but leaves out features like a USB interface. Applying the faster version to the Lumix TZ5, though, Panasonic made it right again. If you happen to have a computer with a fast USB 2.0 High Speed interface, you can also use a fast USB 2.0 High Speed card reader which prevents you from having to connect the camera.

Panasonic TZ5 Lithium Ion battery
The Panasonic Lumix TZ5 uses a heavier Lithium Ion battery than its brother, the TZ3. The Panasonic TZ5 camera gets its energy from a Panasonic CGA-S007E 3.7V 1000mAh battery. According to CIPA standard, the capacity should be fine for some 300 pictures or approximately 150 minutes. Recharging the battery through the battery charger takes around 120 minutes. The average user will probably be fine with this. However, in situations when more pictures will be taken, such as holidays, parties etc, I'd recommend purchasing a second battery.
